Vacant Image Interview
Vacant Image interview with Pete Devine of Pete’s Rock News and Views
PD. What type of artist are you?
VI. We are a 3 piece Alternative Rock band.
PD. Tell us the brief history of yourself.
VI. The band was originally called VI and formed in 2010 and over the course of a few years, the line-up changed numerous times. In 2016 the line-up solidified and we changed the name to Vacant Image and really started getting out there, playing shows and recently releasing our debut album, Before 12.
PD. Who are your musical and non-musical influences?
VI. Musically, the band has been influenced by various bands and styles. Predominantly rock, metal and blues. Specifically Elvis and The Beatles through to Alice In Chains, Foo Fighters and Sevendust.
Non-musically, Gordon Ramsay, and our family and friends that have supported us unconditionally through the whole process.

PD. What are your dreams and goals?
VI.There is always that end game dream where we play to millions of people and live the fine life off our music. For us, we find it very rewarding setting small goals and achieving them. The more small goals we achieve will lead us to accomplishing our bigger goals and dreams.
PD. Who writes your songs, what are they about?
VI. Previously, Josh has written the vocals, guitar and bass sections and Chris has written the drum sections. Going forward it will be a collaboration.
The songs are about the inner turmoil we all go through as humans and all the different songs represent different states of mind and emotions we all experience. You know, you’re up really high one day and the next things aren’t so great. Our music and specifically the album are exploring these things.
PD. How do you promote your band and shows?
VI. We try to spread the word as much as possible. Word of mouth, Social MediA, radio and even hand out flyers in person.
PD. What do you think about downloading music online?
VI. Downloading music is fine as long as you go to shows. A lot of bands don’t care about how you get their music as long as you head to shows. They might see a couple of dollars from an album sale online as opposed to seeing $30 for one t-shIrt sale. Bands also see admission fees. If you get enjoyment out of a band go to a show! Go buy a ShIrt! And if you really love them, buy an album!

PD. What’s your outlook on the record industry today?
VI. We’ve heard about a lot of success stories and horror stories within the record industry but so far have managed to avoid it‘s pitfalls. Really though, we’ve yet to fully experience it before being able to discuss it subjectively.
PD. What’s your claim to fame?
VI. Our live shows. We take pride in our live shows and make sure all of our hard work shows on stage.
PD. What are some of your pet peeves?
VI. Well for most of the band, being called “champ” seems to be of some annoyance lol! So does my butt crack when I bend over and the boys cop an eye full!
PD. What are the biggest obstacles for artists?
VI. Money plays a big part in being a setback for bands. We believe that you can still get top quality without going into debt for it. I guess that comes down to managing your band carefully. It can be tough managing a band; sometimes it can even turn into a full time job. We are lucky that we all get along and share very similar views on things; it makes it a lot easier for us to move forward.

PD. Tell us about your next shows and why we should be there.
VI. Our next show will be at the Whole Lotta Heavy Fest down in Geelong Vic with a few friends of ours. We are super excited for this show! We have had a lot of fans asking us when we would come down to Geelong, so we had to come down and play. Why should anyone be there? Simple! If you love music and love talking about music, it’s a no brainer. Come to our shows! We have an awesome community that surrounds us and we are always open to those that would like to join us.
