On February 1st 2019, Horror Pain Gore Death Records will release Thanatophobia by Unendlich.
Unendlich. A word with endless possibilities for interpretation. It could be a comment on the futility of existence, the fact that we are doomed to repeat our mistakes. Or it could be attributed to project mastermind Michael Connors’ constant flow of creativity – four highly-regarded releases in less than five years is an impressive feat for a man from Maryland. Thanatophobia is the latest in this line, and continues that pedigree set by Monarch of the Damned and Scales of Existence.
Once again enlisting Anthony Rouse to help out on drums, the duo draw on the power of their forefathers in the US and Scandinavian scenes to weave forward-thinking melodic black metal. Right from the off, Mr. Connors shows he’s not messing around on “Oblivion of Time” – a vitriolic start riddled with blast beats and atonal guitar work to make even stone-faced black metaller headbang. Those who spun the previous EP will be familiar with “Already Dead” and its unexpected Ulver-like cleans, but there’s plenty more to dig into here. The needling melodies on “Death Rights”, for instance, a track which explodes from the first note riding on choral chants. Every track sounds pristine – such as the bass which drives “Becoming Fire” – a tip to the legendary Magnus ‘Devo’ Andersson who mixed and mastered the affair.
Speaking on the lyrical topics, Connors comments that, “Thanatophobia deals with the reliance on religion as a mechanism to satisfy the human ego’s desire to attribute meaning to one’s existence and pacify the feelings of discomfort in the unknown – in life and in death.” Taking time to read the lyric sheet and watch Posesión (referenced in “The Final Error”) is an illuminating affair, far removed from the dime-a-dozen Satan-baiting bands that have dominated black metal since time immemorial. This philosophical approach is indicative of the album as a whole – well-planned, neatly executed, and only natural to revisit again and again.
