Under the Tongue – Interview

Interview with Pete Devine of Pete’s Rock News and Views (http://petesrocknewsandviews.com)

PD: What type of artist are you?

UTT: We are an alternative rock with tribal and electro/experimental elements and singalong melodies. Mark Eden (vocals/guitar/drums/programming) from Melbourne, Australia and Julia Eden (vocals/bass/piano) from Berlin, Germany.

You could say that originally we wanted to make rock music for films and everything has stemmed from there. Imagine music for the series Peaky Blinders, a Dracula film or a Tim Burton movie and then you are on the right track.  If your unconscious could sing… you just might be listening to Under The Tongue.

PD: Tell us the brief history of yourself.

UTT: Mark……We met in 2008 after Julia came to see one of my solo concerts at a festival in Berlin. Julia who is a fan of all things Australian wrote to me  on Myspace….yep you heard it Myspace 😉 and said that she had a great time at the gig. Being inquisitive I checked out her page and saw that she played piano, bass and sang. As I was looking for a bass player at the time I suggested we have a jam…..fast forward 3-4 months and we met and spoke for hours about music and everything else. The natural progression for us was to start a band with all of our influences rolled into one and of course our vibe was to be thrown in there.

PD: Who are your musical and non-musical influences?

UTT: Musical influences are quite eclectic I would say ranging from The Beatles to Ben Harper, Puscifer, Elliot Smith, Audioslave, Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath, Slade, Cat Stevens….and the list could go on. As far as non-musical influences go they would be people like Basquiat, Picasso, Brett Whiteley, Nietzsche, Osho, Salvador Dali…

PD: What are your dreams and goals?

UTT: Our  dreams and goals seem to be rolled into one.

To keep doing what we love, recording, writing and performing our music world wide, making super cool video clips and continue to create stuff that we can stand behind.

Also to live self sufficient on own block of land which would be totally cool, we are in the process of setting that up at the moment.

PD: Who writes your songs, what are they about?

UTT.Mark writes 95% of the songs and the other 5% we have written together.

Mark. I have no idea what they are about sometimes or where they come from.

If I began to analyse it, it would drive me nuts. They can be about dreams, fear, love, the eternal question of wtf are we doing here as well as I like to write from a complete alter ego point of view. This is fun as it lets my sub conscience out for a bit of a run.

PD: How do you promote your band and shows?

UTT: We are learning to promote our music on social media as without this as an artist nowadays you are dead in the water. We have a few good people helping us also which is cool. We are building a nice network you could say 🙂

PD: What do you think about downloading music online?

UTT: Mark: I remember when I was young and I recorded songs from friends as I really liked the music so I get it if people want to download the music if they are a fan. Not just to collect as many songs as they can but to really listen, cause they love it and can’t afford it or have no other means of listening. We would really appreciate people coming to see us live when we are in their country and buying the merchandise at the gigs or online as music and making videos cost heaps. That would really help us continue to do what we love and being independent, everything comes out of our own pocket.

PD: What song do you wish you had written and why?

UTT:  you are killing’ us, only one song? Ok here is a couple.

Mark. The Pot by Tool as I love what he is saying  and the groove is killa.  Rolling Stones, Sympathy For The Devil, why I mean ….please.

Julia. ‘Show Me How To Live’ by Audioslave,  rocks and grooves like nothing else and also the song ’Headache’ by Jordan Cook aka Reignwolf as for me it is the perfect rock ‘ballad’.

PD: What are some of your pet peeves?

UTT: A pet peeve of ours is people who can’t take their head out of their phones.

PD: What is your proudest moment in music?

UTT: After recording our first album, putting it on and listening was unforgettable.

Having our album ‘Potions’ mastered by Bob Ludwig (Led Zeppelin, The Rolling Stones, Madonna, Black Sabbath,Tool, Puscifer ……was such a great moment, he is awesome.

PD: So what are you working on at the moment?

UTT: We are working on the video for our first single ‘Waterfall’ which will be released on June the 5th and the official video will come out on the 19th of June, so it is all go go go at the moment. We’re also getting a great live set happening and are pretty busy with managing the day to day stuff around the music.

PD: What music have you available online and where can we buy it from?

UTT: You can listen or purchase our music on all the usual platforms like Spotify, Youtube, iTunes, Amazon, Deezer etc. Also it is possible to get your physical copies and merch through our shop on our official website under-the-tongue.com.

Thanks so much for the opportunity to have a chat with you Pete, we really appreciate it.

Cheers Under The Tongue J
