The Velvicks – Interview

Interview with Pete Devine of Pete’s Rock News and Views (http://petesrocknewsandviews.com)

PD: What type of artist are you?

TV: The type you bring home to introduce to your family haha. Jokes aside, speaking for myself, I’m an artist who has mastered the art of creating melody, lyrics and rhythm embedded in the Rock genre to communicate and/or express a point or a feeling, charging (when possible), a fee for my products and services.

PD: Tell us a brief history of yourself.

TV: Born in Brazil, raised between Brazil and the US, I learned to find ground and feel comfortable behind a guitar. After graduating Advertising school I backpacked the world and ended up spending 3 years in Argentina before settling back in Sao Paulo, where I took the music path seriously. I was then introduced to Roy Cicala who produced my former band OYF and was responsible for opening the American market for us back in 2013. Years later, already living in NYC, I formed The Velvicks, released our debut EP in 2020 and in 2021 we will release a few more singles followed by a full length in Nov/Dec.

PD: Who are your musical and non-musical influences?

TV: My musical influences from the top of my head are REM and Julio Iglesias. My non-musical influence, even though I make music because of him I’d say is my brother, Lino.

PD: What are your dreams and goals?

TV: Currently my dream is to spend the winters in the studio and the summers touring. My goal is to monetize it enough to live on a yacht off of the Amalfi coast haha.

PD: Who writes your songs, what are they about?

TV: I usually come up with a seed of a song and present it to the band who instantly take the tune to another level with their talent. I write the lyrics and I usually write about the more simplistic and mundane human experiences between friends, family, significant other, expectations, lessons learned the hard way, bullets dodged along the way and wounds big enough to tell their stories and share my 2 cents of life

PD: How do you promote your band and shows?

TV: Mostly virtual, although I know the incredible results a guerilla team achieves, I haven’t been able to develop one myself.

PD: What do you think about downloading music online?

TV: I think the whole concept needs to be revisited. I think a model where streams and a better paid system is unavoidable. Regulations for spotify are already in talks in Europe and it’ll have a domino effect across the map, forcing spotify to increase their monthly fee or utterly change their business practices, ultimately generating a gap for a new model. I put some thought into this and in an ideal world, it should be the token format. Picture this: $5 would give you 5.000 tokens and each token allows you to listen to a song. Now, instead of being paid 0.003 cents per play the artist is receiving 1 cent per play. Who wouldn’t pay a cent to listen to a song they love? Think about it. Anyway, the streaming music service problem was solved. Next question

PD: What song do you wish you’d written and why?

TV: Sympathy for the Devil by The Rolling Stones. Have you ever seen a numb reaction to that song as it starts playing no matter where or when? The Stones definitely got the better end of that contract haha

PD: What are some of your pet peeves?

TV: One of my biggest pet peeves are when people are unaware of themselves or their belongings in public spaces. Also if someone is constantly kicking the chair I’m sitting on. I go bananas haha

PD: What is your proudest moment in music?

TV: I once performed at Hard Rock cafe in Memphis and right after the show the venue’s manager invited us to sign our names on a wall alongside rockstars signatures. It was pretty insane to me. It must’ve been his last day and he wanted to screw his boss or something.

PD: So what are you working on at the moment?

TV: Our next release is a cover song, a version of ‘You’ve Lost That Loving Feeling’ from the righteous brothers. Release date is July 2nd together with ‘Top Gun 2’ haha

PD: What music have you available online and where can we buy it from?

TV: Our debut EP is available on all platforms out there. From soundcloud, Itunes, youtube and all the streaming services.
