The Radio Broadcast – Interview

Interview with Pete Devine of Pete’s Rock News and Views (http://petesrocknewsandviews.com)

PD: What type of artist are you?

TRB: We are Live Electronic Artists that create synth based electronic music. We do not use guitars and we do not use live drums (we used to). We create all of our music with keyboards, synthesizers, microphones, samplers and computer software. We create most of our tracks live as apposed to playing to a backing track. We do not perform stading behind a computer, we perform using all of the equipment we used to create the tracks that are being performed.

PD: Tell us the brief history of yourself.

TRB: There are two of us in the group. Michael plays keys and loops/samples and Kristin sings and plays keys as well. We met in a tattoo shop in 2005 and started playing music together in 2008 and formed TRB in 2009. Michael grew up playing drums in punk bands and Kristin grew up playing the piano but at the time when the two met neither of them were involved in anything musically. We had both wanted to create our own punk band but relaized after purchasing a guitar neither of us knew how to play nor had the time or patience to learn so we stuck with what we knew, drums and keys. Over the years our sound and style has changed along with the overall setup of the equipment we use. Our style is always evolving

PD: Who are your musical and non-musical influences?

TRB: There is a lot of inspiration and musical influence to be found in the world and for us as far a music goes  there are two major electronic groups that have stuck out the most and helped shape our minds to develope the sounds of The Radio Broadcast and that would be Crystal Castles and INNERPARTYSYSTEM. We study these bands and many others to try and better ourselves as a band. But as crazy as life can get it is always a good idea to take a step back and take a little time out and emerce yourself in nature and tune in to the frequencies of the planet, clear your mind, and realign yourself. Once your mind is clear and your body is well tuned it will be a lot easier for your creative ideas to flow into more comprehensive complete ideas.

PD: What are your dreams and goals?

TRB: Dreams are Fun and Goals are Nice. We all dream big and and come up with big goals but they all need to be realistic. Of cousre we dream about touring and playing big festivals for thousands of people. What musician doesnt!? We have several goals short term and long term and they may not be Big Goals to some but they are of value to us and they are realistic. We have goals set for new stage lighting, new merch, new transportation, and a bigger online presence with more content. A nice dream of ours is to be able to make a suitable living creating and playing music  traveling the world to be able to connect with people through music. One of Our Biggest Dreams is that of a Booking Agent.  Yes we are capable of booking our own shows and tours and we have been doing so since the beginning but with us being an electronic group booking can be a bit more difficult when it comes to bigger events.

PD: Who writes your songs, what are they about?

TRB: We are both heavily involved in the writing process. Musically I would say Michael has a bit more time in creating tracks but when it comes to lyrics that is Kristin all the way.
Our music isnt really written towards certain topics. We arent trying to push any certain views or thoughts. We write based on the feelings that are felt when developing particular tracks.
Lyrical deas  come from all over the place.

PD: How do you promote your band and shows?

TRB: We do a lot of online promotion. We also will leave flyers, stickers, cds, or download cards at different businesses. One time we even created our own signs with all the specifics for the event, dressed in costume and walked around town to promote an event.

PD: What do you think about downloading music online?

TRB: We love being able to purchase and download music online. It is so much ore convenient to be able top stream or download music. There is definitely less wasted material but there are still those people that prefer a physical copy of the music. The one thing that is sad to see leave the music industry due to online music downloading is the record store/music store vibe. I remember as a kid having a blast a music stores. Always one of our favorite places to go

PD: What song do you wish you’d written and why?

TRB: That’s a great question. With all of the music that is out there im sure that every single song is loved by somebody but we are truely greatful for the music that we have been able to produce. If we had written any  song that is out there today whos to say that song would what it is today? Kinda like when a band plays a cover but the original is where its at.

PD: What are some of your pet peeves?

TRB: Unrelyable people and people that do not follow through with what they say. We have delt with so many people through out the years being involved in music. We have had some really good experiences and some not so good experiences. We have been treated unfairly and treated as royalty. But in the end the biggest thing that bothers us the most are people that do not follow through with things on their end and people that want you to entrust them with your livelyhood but end up falling short. We have learned to take what others say lightly  and not hold them to it and we have learned we can only rely on each other.

PD: What is your proudest moment in music?

TRB: We will have to say booking, planning and venturing through with our first tour.
Touring is something that we had always talked about and when we were able to finally take off on our own tour  it made us feel really good. Touring is one of those things that yeah most bands do but the feelings, emotions, and connections you create from that tour are truly amazing.

PD: So what are you working on at the moment?

TRB: We just released a new EP at the beginning of the year but we are currently working on 10 or so new tracks that we would like to start releasing by late srping early summer. We are also working on some video editing and graphic design for a couple new videos we will be releasing over the next couple months.

PD: Tell us about your next shows and why we should be there.

TRB: We have several shows coming up over the next couple months with a tour in the works and if  you are looking for a show that will leave you feeling rewarded and fully entertained you will definitely want to come out to one of our events. With our music being very diverse there is something there for most everybody. We are always told by fans and other muscians that it is really cool to see us create the tracks live right there in front of them. Something that a lot of othere electronic artists are not doing. The energy projecting from the stage will keep you moving the entire time. As soon as the bass drops TRB comes alive. Between Kristin’s bouncing and crawling around on stage and Michael’s non-stop flow of body rockin dance rhythms you will be sure to have a good time! Not only will our music and energy keep you entertained and dancing but our stage performance will as well. We understand that we are performers and there is more to performing than just the music. We have put some time and dedication into creating  some pretty cool visuals from massive arrays of led lights and lasers to mesmerising graphics on led screens and a 3ft by 10ft led “TRB” marquee. We are constantly coming up with new ideas for stage setups that will compliment our sound.
