Interview with Pete Devine of Pete’s Rock News and Views (http://petesrocknewsandviews.com)
PD: How would you describe yourself or your band as an artist?
TNB:Life long rock and rollers
PD: Can you tell us briefly about your background – i.e. where you’re from, how you came to make music, etc.
TNB: We are all New Jersey born and bred except Dan Skye, our Bassist….He is from Belgium but came to America at 12yrs old. We all have been playing our perspective instruments since grammar school…John Croot (Keyboards), Gar Francis (guitar) Dan Skye(bass) Johnnie Rago (Drums), Me…Wayne Olivieri (vocals) My start was the Saint Mary’s Boys Choir………where I learned to sing and got an instant love for being on stage , but in that case it was a choir loft. We all have been in bands our whole lives….many people do the music thing then get married, or find a job or whatever then drop out…..we all have our stories but one thing in common is none of us EVER quit…..most musicians along the way do …or stop for a few decades …then when they retire get in a copy band and are ok with that.
We all got together about 4years ago ..we all have our stories on how we came to the conclusion to start TNB. The fast version is…Gar and I have been lifelong friends and went our separate musical ways years ago….4 Years ago He approached me and asked if I was interested to get back to our roots and put together a straight up, no BS (gadgets, autotune etc) rock and roll band…………I said “Yea” and blab la bla the NEW Bardots were hatched!!!.
The love of Rock and Roll still surges through our veins ….seems like we will go out of this world making music weather or not it will turn out being rich or poor ..at this point it really doesn’t matter.
PD: Who and what inspires you to make music, both in terms of musical and other influences? What do you like to write about in your songs?
TNB:For me (I write most of the lyrics)Life in general and all my past experiences influence my words…sometimes it could be an event like an election or an epidemic or just an observation…..sometimes its just Gar with a Title of the song …then Ill run with it…..Gar usually always comes up with the music ..Dan also will contribute….then the rest of the band gets ahold of it and turns it into a finished product.
PD: What are your aspirations as an artist?
TNB: I think it would be great to make enough money as to not worry about paying the bills while doing something you love. If we could maintain a fair amount of airplay and downloads/streams etc that would be great too.
PD: What is the proudest moment in your music career so far?
TNB:For me its NOW….. Survival!! ………after all the bands, players, agents, lies, back stabbings, drugs, alcohol and disappointments …We are making some great rock and roll
PD: Promoting one’s music is such a challenge these days, especially with so many new artists emerging from bedrooms in the day of the home studio. How is that going?
TNB: Its very crazy out there…….as a teenager it was just “Get A Record Deal”….and your in!!
Today…its all changed…….Spotify gets 10,000 new songs A DAY…..A DAY!!
Over the past 5 or 6 years or so I have been able to learn ….slowly …how and what it takes to ….well lets face it …..ya gotta make money to survive…..and ya need money to market….it seems so may of these so called Experts who want to share with you their success or all these song writing contest , or so called record labels …who ALL charge you to “Submit” are mostly bull shit!!
We are lucky that we found a few good marketing people that we use to maintain our presence internationally…..we still need that big “POP” but we do get a fair amount of spins, airplay etc to give us enough incentive to put out more material. And TNB have plenty of that.
PD: And how do you book and promote your live shows and tours? Any performances coming up?
TNB: With Covid two years ago we lost out on going to Europe …twice….we did , however Headline The Stone Pony which is one of the biggest clubs in the tristate area of NY,NJ and CT….We also opened for Squeeze and did a few out door shows. W just did a show In Asbury Park at another famous venue “The Wonder Bar” ….then we had a bit of bad luck…Gar lost some of his mobility in his left hand from a pinched nerve….we are back to rehearsing again and luckily had just finished tracking 9 new songs when it happened…we haven’t played live since June ….then last week John our keyboard player snapped his wrist playing soccer!!!……He should be good to go by September …so we are concentrating on getting out another ep in a few weeks to follow up with Why Don’t We Do it In The Road”
PD: What do you think about downloading music online? What about streaming sites like Spotify?
TNB: Really doesn’t matter at this point…I personally think it fucks real musicians who need the money to live….but WTF can we do except keep trying to get Spotify and the powers that be to pay the fucking bands more and stop squeezing the blood out of us independents . The big corporate bands get the big tours and million dollar promotion……..Magazines, internet radio, pod radio and people like you who give good ,indi bands a listen then help promote us is whats left of the real true music biz (my opinion)
PD: What song do you wish you’d written and why?
Happy Birthday……..So my name can live in infamy and my offspring for generations would be taken care of.
PD: Is there anything you don’t like about the music industry, which you would change if you could?
Yea…break up the radio industry and the record industry ….The huge conglomerates who own most ALL the radio stations in the USA and the record companies who push only what they want because they own the bands ….I hate the top 40 of today…most of it sucks (In my opinion)
PD: So, what are you working on at the moment?
TNB : Mixing the new EP for release in September ……..also putting some final vocals on a few unfinished tracks for the Single/EP following the September release.
PD: Where can we learn more about you and buy your music/merch online?
TNB:We are on ALL the major download sites iTunes, Bandcamp, amazon etc
