The Mound Builders – Interview

The Mound Builders – Interview

Interview with Pete Devine of Pete’s Rock News and Views (

PD: What type of artist are you?

TMB: We are a four-piece sludge metal and punk band from Indiana.

PD: Tell us the brief history of yourself.

TMB: We began jamming as early as late 2008 and began playing shows in the area the following year. That early period culminated in 2011 with our debut full-length release, Strangers in a Strange Land. In the years since, we worked on expanding our audience by playing several cities across the Midwest, dropping a couple split and EP releases here and there.

PD: Who are your musical and non-musical influences?

TMB: In terms of musical influences, we draw a lot of inspiration from classics like Black Sabbath, Motorhead, Metallica, and a number of punk bands. Some contemporary influences would be bands like High on Fire, Corrosion of Conformity, Eyehategod… way too many to name. We’ve also been inspired over the years by a good many bands from here in Indiana. As for our non-musical influences, we dabble in everything from old adventure flicks, “Ancient Aliens” kind of shows, and just life here in Midwest.

PD: What are your dreams and goals?

TMB: Really, we just want to create good music and know there are people out there who appreciate it. There’s nothing in the way of an absolute “goal” we’ve set for ourselves… obviously, we want to find ways to spread our music to newer and larger audiences, but as long as we can keep picking up our instruments and rocking out, we’re always living the dream.

PD: Who writes your songs, what are they about?

TMB: Our song-writing is fairly collaborative. We all stick to developing our own parts, but we also like to work with each other through suggestion and feedback. As for the topics of our songs, there’s no overarching theme, or anything like that… usually, the meanings can range from sci-fi and fantasy themes to real world events.

PD: How do you promote your band and shows?

TMB: Social media is the bread and butter of promoting these days, but we also find some success in additionally doing the footwork and putting up flyers in key locations. Having a physical presence out there really makes a difference in getting the word out.

PD: What do you think about downloading music online?

TMB: Some of us have digital collections, but we don’t download as much as we used to. Streaming seems to be taking over the market, and we all collectively feel if there’s anything worth purchasing, might as well get a physical copy.

PD: What’s your outlook on the record industry today?

TMB: On many levels, it’s really oversaturated, but still thriving in its own way. It’s really hard to get attention when there are so many bands out there that fit the complete package that audiences are really looking for, but there are a lot of self-sufficient markets-within-markets for a lot of smaller bands to thrive.

PD: What is your proudest moment in music?

TMB: Having played a few festivals in the past few years has given us a lot to be proud about. Playing Full Terror Assault for two consecutive years  two such moments.

PD: Tell us about your next shows and why we should be there.

TMB: Over the next month, we’ve got a string of shows taking us to Peru, Indiana on January 19th, Indianapolis on the 26th, Tolono, Illinois on February 9th for Hibernation Sickness HeavyFest, and back in our hometown of Lafayette on February 23rd for our ten year celebration. You should be there not only because our newest full-length release will be available, but because our live show never fails to leave an impression.
