The Hangmen

Interview with Pete Devine of Pete’s Rock News and Views (http://petesrocknewsandviews.com)

PD. What type of artist are you?

Rock n roll.

PD. Tell us the brief history of yourself.

The band was formed less than a year ago, Tom (lead guitar + vocals) and Grant (vocals + Rhythm) had flirted with the idea of putting a band together for a while after a number of drunken jams… before long the songs being produced were to good to ignore. That’s when we got got Ash and Leigh onboard…. the rest… history.

PD. Who are your musical and non-musical influences?

Way to many to mention, Beatles, small faces, Everly brothers, zombies and then there artists like Bowie. Non musical… Cyril the Swan and Mr Clement

The dream is for people to hear the music and think…. that’s it, that’s the band I’ve been waiting for…

PD. What are your dreams and goals?

The dream is for people to hear the music and think…. that’s it, that’s the band I’ve been waiting for… and on the back of that sell out bigger gigs. The music scene has been waiting for a true guitar band to break through with strong tunes… we’re that band!

PD. Who writes your songs, what are they about?

It’s probably around a 70/30 split between Tom (70) and Grant (30), although an idea can be thrown around amongst the 4 of us which turns into a song or a stronger idea that needs work. The influence over each other helps define our sound. We write mainly about experiences or stories we share. One rule no love songs about her indoors!

We’ve been lucky, people believe in our songs and ugly mugs and are generally happy to do a lot for us!

PD. How do you promote your band and shows?

Social media and radio is the main source of promotion. Facebook and twitter are a great platform for any band these days. We’ve been lucky, people believe in our songs and ugly mugs and are generally happy to do a lot for us!

PD. What do you think about downloading music online?

Don’t do it…. it’s killing the industry. Go and watch a band… or plug a guitar in yourself!

PD. What’s your outlook on the record industry today?

They’ll find us… maybe we’ll have more of an opinion then?

PD. What song do you wish you’d written and why?

Shine (Aswad) great summer tune (it’s a band thing… Tin Solider (The small faces) it has everything! It varies between members… apart from Aswad of course

PD. What are some of your pet peeves?

The lack of live music venues, however there does seem to be a resurgence recently in new venues and bands, let’s hope the cycle is turning.

Selling out our own headline shows so early on in the bands existence

PD. What is your proudest moment in music?

Selling out our own headline shows so early on in the bands existence and being asked to play an exclusive private gig where we were rubbing shoulders with some very well known music producers.

PD. Tell us about your next shows and why we should be there.

We headline the Swansea Fringe fest 30th September at the Hyst and then play a very intimate gig in the britpop cafe in the middle of October (both in Swansea).
We’re due to play London again a few times in November before we head back into the studio. You should be there as it may never happen again!
