Interview with Pete Devine of Pete’s Rock News and Views (http://petesrocknewsandviews.com)
PD: What type of artist are you?
TGS: We’re a hard rock band out of West Virginia! We enjoy all kinds of rock and roll, and we like to put it all together in our own music. If we had to talk about our sound, we’d mostly say it’s a mix of old 70s classic rock and 90s era grunge, mixed in with some modern adjustments.
PD: Tell us the brief history of yourself.
TGS: We originally started off as a cover band after Billy, our guitarist, and I splintered off from a previous band. From there, we picked up Daniel, our bassist, and started out playing covers in bars. Most recently, our drummer John joined, and we really started getting into the music we write. Now we’re working on a debut EP, and sharing our music with the world!
PD: Who are your musical and non-musical influences?
TGS: We really dig a lot of the stuff from modern and grunge-era rock. We tend to notice a lot of our inspiration comes from bands like Alice in Chains and Soundgarden, as well as newer stuff like Crobot and Rival Sons. We also enjoy a lot of the groove from Zeppelin-era rock n roll.
PD: What are your dreams and goals?
TGS: Super far in the future, we hope to rock our songs out to the Red Rocks Amphitheatre! Right now, we’re really excited to be pushing out this new material in the summer. We’re also immensely excited to be putting out our music on tour, and we hope one day our fans can sing the choruses of our music back to us.
PD: Who writes your songs, what are they about?
TGS: Billy and I typically write the songs for the band. We generally start with a guitar riff that he or I wrote, then from there I start to write a melody and lyrics. Describing what the songs I write are about is a little difficult. Sometimes, I know exactly what theme or idea I want to use when songwriting. Other times, I’ll write out random phrases and try and figure out what it means and kind of create a story from that phrase.
PD: How do you promote your band and shows?
TGS: We make all of our announcements through our social media pages and on our website. For shows we’ll hang up and share posters, get event links for tickets, and just use simple word-of-mouth and invite people personally.
PD: What do you think about downloading music online?
TGS: Downloading music online is what got this band started! We started out our first two releases, “Miss Sunshine” and “Turn Me to Stone” being put on streaming platforms and online radios, so we’ve come to really appreciate the online platforms. Of course, there is always the risk of piracy, but we as a group are just glad to get our stuff out into the world!
PD: What song do you wish you’d written and why?
TGS: The answer to that question practically changes every week! Right now, the one song I wish I had written is “Shit Keeps Happenin” by Seven Year Witch. One of the grooviest tunes I have ever heard.
PD: What are some of your pet peeves?
TGS: The list of the band’s pet peeves includes guitar riffs with no groove, I-79, not being on tour 24/7, and not playing at the Red Rocks Amphitheatre.
PD: What is your proudest moment in music?
TGS: One of our proudest moments so far has to be playing the Metropolitan Theatre in Morgantown. It was some of the most fun and we got to play with a lot of very talented artists, including one of our favorite local bands called Ducain.
PD: So what are you working on at the moment?
TGS: We’re actually wrapping up the tracking for our debut EP that’s coming out July 8! We’re extremely excited to be getting this new material out, and we hope that people enjoy what we’ve been working on. Just a couple weeks ago, we released our first single off of it, “Golden Headstone”
PD: What music have you available online and where can we buy it from?
TGS: We have three songs out right now, those being “Miss Sunshine”, “Turn Me to Stone”, and “Golden Headstone”. We’re online on all platforms like Spotify, Apple Music, and other streaming platforms. We have all of our links on our website at www.thegrymsins.com!
