The Golden Leaves – Interview

Interview with Pete Devine of Pete’s Rock News and Views (http://petesrocknewsandviews.com)

PD: What type of artist are you?

TGL: You know the old school type of artist? The trashing the hotel room, doing drugs on stage, demanding special treatment because we are simply the best? Yeah, we’re not like that at all. We are grateful and respective towards the hosts. Usually leave the room in the same order as we entered it. If you need to be an asshole to get somewhere, we don’t want to go. That’s our moto.

PD:Tell us the brief history of the band.

TGL: Veni, vidi, vici. And if that’s too brief. We all met under different circumstances, connected to alcohol (except one instance, which were milk related, but Arthur don’t like to speak about it). We recorded a song in a friend’s living room, and then the ball started to roll. After that we have been invited to party with the music top in Manchester, warmed up for Skambankt and Klovner i Kamp (two awesome Norwegian bands) and are soon ready to release our first album.

PD: Who are your musical and non-musical influences?

TGL: The whole band says Javier’s mom. Not as a dirty joke, you pervert. But she always stood up for us, until she moved. A real supporter. She may not have helped us, musically, but without her we would never have gotten our equipment to gigs or recording sessions, or eaten proper before gigs! So yes, we watched our hero’s in Led Zeppelin and Queen, and dreamed about playing music, but she made it possible.

PD: What are your dreams and goals?

TGL: To do what we love, and to be able to do it for a living. Peace on earth and to end poverty would be great to, but we don’t se why that can’t happen, and we still get to play at the Royal Albert Hall.

PD: Who writes your songs, what are they about?

TGL: We all write now and then, but Javier has up to now been the master mind behind the most of our songs. The only problem is that he actually has a secret dream of being the first boyband-rapper, and that’s reflected in some of his songs. When that happens the rest of us must be strict and discard them. Arthur also writes some amazing songs, but since we don’t play disco we never use them. He say’s there’s plenty of rock’n roll in songs about happy people, dancing on Greek islands. We don’t agree.

PD: How do you promote your band and shows?

TGL: Well, Torleiv once plotted to brake in on a local network to play our music until the police came. But since that didn’t happen, yet, we use our vast network to reach new people.

PD: What do you think about downloading music online?

TGL: Hard question. Although people should support the artists, I understand that you can’t buy everything. But in the era of streaming, you don’t really have a good excuse for not just streaming the music you like. In that way the artist at least gets a little droplet.

PD: What song do you wish you’d written and why?

TGL: All I want for Christmas. I mean, yeah, Bohemian Rhapsody is mind blowing, but the royalties from October to December each year…?

PD: What are some of your pet peeves?

TGL: You know when people snap to get your attention? Don’t. If you care for your fingers.

PD: What is your proudest moment in music?

TGL: Hm, well the Manchester trip was pretty cool. John “Stret” Stretford, the founder of Purple Univers, was in Norway for a Deep Purple concert, and happened to be visiting Circus Bar, where Torleiv is working. Long story short, he heard our music, loved it and wanted to meet the rest of the group. So he invited us to the company’s yearly party.

PD: So what are you working on at the moment?

TGL: Our new album. It’s soon ready for release, so we’re working hard to get everything in place.

PD: Tell us about your next shows and why we should be there.

TGL: We don’t have a new concert date yet, because our former drummer quit to become a doctor. So we’re currently working with a new drummer, and is merging with him. We’ll probably play again before the end of the year.
