The France

The France – California

(Released July 9th 2021 through Fear Records)

Continuing their string of releases, North West indie-poppers The France are back with ‘California’, their latest offering. Harbouring the same button-bright optimism as previously well-received singles such as ‘Forever Too Long’ and ‘Better Off Alone’, it’s a perfectly-timed slice of summer distilled into three minutes.

Such is their appeal, that the band have quickly amassed over 10k online streams, whilst garnering support from the likes of XFM, Absolute Radio and BBC Introducing. Not content with just radio however, The France were handpicked as main support for both indie champions Reverend & The Makers and pop giants Scouting For Girls.

It’s this combination of relatable indie and danceable pop that make the prospect of The France so irresistible, and their latest single is no different. Three minutes of synth-driven indie pop, ‘California’ is, in true France fashion, a love letter of sorts. Not to someone but quite clearly somewhere.

“There aren’t many places on Earth better than Rochdale,” the band explain. “But California is one of them. San Fran, San Diego, LA: we fell in love, and this is for them. Prior to recording our producer said “you’ve either written one of the best riffs ever written or you’ve accidentally stolen it.” So let’s just say he’s recorded one of the best riffs ever written”.

Like previous single ‘Forever Too Long’ before it, ‘California’ is hinged on both the huge melodies and the heartfelt lyricism that have already endeared The France to so many. And for the uninitiated, it’s just the tip of their technicolour indie-pop iceberg.

The France are:

  • Liam Dodd – Vocals / Bass Guitar
  • Richard Marshall – Keys / Synth
  • Joel Murphy – Vocals / Guitar
  • Joe Weetman – Vocals / Drums
