The Dirt – Interview

Interview with Pete Devine of Pete’s Rock News and Views (

PD: What type of artist are you?

The Dirt: We are a genre bending duo who move in the underground networks of alt psych garage punk. And beyond…

We combine the spoken/shouted lyric with guitar loops effects distortion and reverb. Accompanied by percussion and lots of energy..

PD: Tell us the brief history of yourself.

The Dirt: We are a married duo who met in Manchester at a gig. Sachiko is a musician from japan and jack a northern spoken word artist aka leon the pig farmer.

We have mutual love of the same music and began creating together in 2020 combining sachiko guitar loops effects and distortion with the spoken word of jack. We first went live in dec 2021. And having pricked up a few ears quickly went full speed into gigging nationaly..

After the online lockdown EPs we released a limited efition CD that flew off the shelf. We quickly got a noticed in manchester. Jack aka leon was already gigging with bands.

But the word is quickly spreading nationally due to some great festival slots in the first year.

PD: Who are your musical and non-musical influences?

The Dirt: Sachiko – loves 70s prog to 90s shoegaze with a sprinkling of brit indie and psychedlic modern and old.. styles by jimmy page and And Bell to name a couple.

Jack – a definite C86 lad with a love for factory creation,  fuzz club and heavenly labels.

Id like to write lyrics that present vivid and unique images as a dali painting influenced by a tarantino film.

Others have said they hear sucide meets spiritualized.. a dark fall/ Division and a spacemen 3- sleaford mods clash.

We will take all those references!!.. lets see what others hear too..

PD: What are your dreams and goals?

The Dirt: Dreams get broken and even open goals get missed.. lets live for the now..

But firstly to have our first vinyl “Agitator” released next year is our priority short term. Hopefully it will turn some heads and get us realised as the real deal.

Then long term keep gigging and maybe hope for some support slots with great established  international alt psych bands.

Get more pedals for sachiko..

(Fuzz club can you hear us???)….

PD: Who writes your songs, what are they about?

The Dirt: Sachiko writes all the guitar parts.. building loops, effects and sounds.

Jack writes the lyrics,

We both decide if how and who will add percussion to a track..

The songs are social awareness and observations. Subject matters close to jacks beliefs, particularly mental health suffering and recovery, social imbalances, political frustrations..

A song can be either lyrically or musically ignited into a piece.. theres no chicken or egg policy…

PD: How do you promote your band and shows?

The Dirt: Social media predominately, sharing, tagging inviting etc.. jacks social sales pitching when out and the none stop emails to promoters and venues!!..

PD: What do you think about downloading music online?

The Dirt: We dont download or subscribe to the main platforms. Currently bandcamp has our attention.

We are two people of an age where vinyl then CD ruled and a tangible product meant worth and longevity.

In the disposable world we current occupy art is easily accessible but short lived, consumed, regurgitated and discarded.

Artists value is exploited, and has developed into a poisoned pit to grab money.

It has its place if buying an album or singles at full cost and the artist benefits..

But streaming from platforms Thats not for us….

PD: What song do you wish you’d written and why?

The Dirt: Jack – its coming home by Baddiel Skinner and lightening seeds..

Just so i could oppose its airplay and its use during the qatar world cup in protest… maybe write an alternative version of the original!!

Sachiko – its not been written yet…

PD: What are some of your pet peeves?

The Dirt: heres a few in our lyrics!!!..

But our angst at the worlds greed, selfishness, self destruction corruptness ensure our first world problem pet peeves blend into insignificance.

But we both hate littering and discarded plastic glasses at gig venues!!..

PD: What is your proudest moment in music?

The Dirt: It will happen when our mits are on our first vinyl record next year!!!

PD: So what are you working on at the moment?

The Dirt: Arranging gigs for next year to promote the album.. taking a break soon to japan before we raise the roof of 2023.

Planning the album release for april 2023. “Agitator” is coming.

PD: What music have you available online and where can we buy it from?

The Dirt: We have 3 EPs on line and a live official bootleg. All are on bandcamp. Theres even a spoken word album on there by jack of his first book of verse/lyrics.

Pre sale of the vinyl.and CD of Agitator will be announced soon via label GBR.
