The Cool Trick – Interview

Interview with Jasper Manuel (drums) of The Cool Trick and Pete Devine of Pete’s Rock News and Views (

PD: What type of artist are you?

JM:My name is Jasper Manuel and I’m the drummer of The Cool Trick. The Cool Trick is an energetic punk rock band. We don’t take ourselves to serious and we make music that we love. We don’t want to be directed in a certain way. I don’t want to be famous or make a lot of money. I want the audience and ourselves to have a good time during our shows.

PD: Tell us the brief history of yourself.

JM: A short story how it all started:
I was about 13 years old and in high school we had to play some instruments for music lessons. Back then I didn’t really care much about music until a friend told me about a band called Blink 182. From this point on, I listened a lot to their music and especially was a huge fan of the drummer. Because of that, I choose for the drums and really wanted to be a Punk Rock drummer. I joined a band called Down In One, we were a cover band of Blink 182. It was cool, we played gigs at my high school. A few years later I was asked by Tommy Markerink to play the drums in The Ramclones, a cover band of The Ramones. We had a lot of fun with all the shows we played but after a while we wanted to do something different. Therefore, Tommy Markerink (guitar and lead vocals) and Teun Brugman, (bass guitar and backing vocals) who studied music together at the Herman Brood Academie, wanted to start a band together and ask me to be their drummer. It all clicked, we founded The Cool Trick in 2013 in the east of the Netherlands. Since then we experienced a lot of beautiful things during shows and rehearsal.

PD: Who are your musical and non-musical influences?

JM: We all share a big love for bands like Descendents, Teenage Bottlerocket, and The Ramones. Personally, I get inspired by Blink 182 especially by there their drum parts. All and all we all love the punk rock style, and this is what you can expect from The Cool trick.

PD: What are your dreams and goals?

JM: Our biggest dream is to play on Punk Rock Holiday, a great punk rock festival in the very beautiful Slovenia. We visited the festival ourselves many times and are huge fans. Therefore, Tommy came up with the idea to write a song about it, which is called ‘’Punk Rock Holiday’’.
Punk Rock Holiday used our song for their after movie from 2019 and offered us a spot on the main stage to open the festival. This was amazing news, a dream came true. The gig was planned for 2020 but due to Corona we are still waiting to get on the stage. Maybe in August 2022, let’s see.
Another goal is to play all over Europa with bands. Usually, we plan one tour a year outside of the Netherlands but the past two years that didn’t happen due to the pandemic.

PD: Who writes your songs, what are they about?

JM: Mostly, Tommy Markerink comes up with ideas for the lyrics and the musical parts. We’ll have band weekends to get a creative space where we brainstorm new ideas for our songs and come up with the most beautiful lyrics. Sometimes it can happen, that we don’t get any further with a text and then we give the finishing touch in the rehearsal studio.
Our songs are about things that we experience in our daily life, like love, punk rock festivals😉 and super heroes.

PD: How do you promote your band and shows?

JM: Through social media such as Instagram and Facebook. On these platforms we share impressions from rehearsals or gigs and new shows or tour dates. Sometimes we created posters to announce our gigs. We have a fan group that is joining almost every gig which is very cool, and they are big supporters. They are also making word of mouth advertising. Thank you for that guys!

PD: What do you think about downloading music online?

JM: We don’t have any problems with that, but sometimes people need to realize that it’s good to support a band. For us, of course it is better that people buy our CD’s, stickers and merchandise, because recording albums, instruments, making CD’s etc. is not cheap.

PD: What song do you wish you’d written and why?

JM: I don’t have a preference in this. There are many lovely and great songs, like songs from Queen.
If I had to mention one: ‘’When you fucked grandpa’’ from Blink 182. It has a very deep meaning and the acoustic guitar is just right there. Ok let’s get serious, my favourite song is ‘’Not now’’ from Blink 182. I love everything about this song, especially the drums. Fun fact: Blink 182/ Travis Barker is the main reason why I wanted to be a drummer.

PD: What are some of your pet peeves?

JM: When people say we play to loud and we have to turn down the volume. When we roll up microphone cables nice and unroll them the next time they are always intertwined like spaghetti. Another pet peeve is that if Tommy sometimes comes up with bad ass sounding guitar riffs but then we all don’t come up with ideas to it, and forget it which is sad, it could have been a nice song.

PD: What is your proudest moment in music?

JM: Probably, the Europe tour in 2018 where we met so many great people. One thing, we will never forget is the gig in Czech Republic, in a small town called Kutna Hora. We played there in the Bar Ceska 1 music club. This show was a tribute to a boy who died there by accident. It was very special for us to play there along with a lot of great other bands. The gig was amazing, the crowd was so energetic! They loved us over there.

PD: So what are you working on at the moment?

JM: We are busy finishing our new album ‘’From The East’’. It is now in the final stages of mixing and mastering. We brought out our single ‘’Paradise’’ and made a nice music video for it. We are very proud of the whole album and think it is our best one yet. When it is finished it will be on Spotify just like our other albums.
We haven’t had a gig for a long time, but we try to rehearse every week. We’ll just keep making music and writing new songs.

PD: What music have you available online and where can we buy it from?
