The Chapter Interview
Interview with Pete Devine of Pete’s Rock News and Views (http://petesrocknewsandviews. com)
PD. What type of artist are you?
TC. Hi, there. We are a band that wants to show feelings and emotions through our music. We want the listener to have a positive and different experience. We don’t want to make a song with specific typology, but after several songs we can say that our music has a tendency for Death and Doom Metal.
PD. Tell us the brief history of yourself.
TC. We started in 2004 creating some riffs and we were putting together pieces and ideas until we created The Chapter. We edited an Ep in 2006 and made several very good gigs. After the difficulties of the musical scene in Portugal, we were forced to reduce the rehearsals and in turn our will. We had to take a break, but in 2015 we returned with force with new songs and new concerts. We had some changes in the elements of the band and we made our album “Angels and Demons”. We are doing concerts promoting the album and we are creating new tracks. We are always moving …
PD. Who are your musical and non-musical influences?
TC. We can’t say for sure that direct influences existed on the album. We can say that the band has influences of Opeth, Gojira, Paradise Lost, Katatonia, but we can also say that there are other bands that certainly also influenced the way we compose. The personal taste of each element is not linear. We have more doom phases, then we can have more Death and Thrash stages. We can identify some tastes, but not as a reference.
PD. What are your dreams and goals?
TC. Playing with Rasgo or Heavenwood would be a privilege. Of course playing with Moonspell would be the ultimate exponent, but above all we want to have good gigs with friendly bands. We would like to participate in Vagos Metal Fest. We have other summer festivals that we like such as Milagre Metaleiro or Casainhos Fest 2018. It would also be great to have dates to do a mini tour in the north and outside the country. We are also trying to book a concert for the south of the country.
PD. Who writes your songs, what are they about?
TC. The songs come from individual ideas that are then complemented by the band. We create a basis for the song and then we can insert an intro, an acoustic, a riff plus death or doom. Regarding lyrics, after the base and structure of the track are made, the vocalist creates the melodies and with this conjugation and inspiration, he inserts the lyrics for the song. Album themes tend to show the differences between good and evil. The name of the album is really this “Angels and Demons”.
PD. How do you promote your band and shows?
TC. Our band and our album was fully produced and promoted by us. We received some proposals from publishers, but none had the model we wanted. One proposal made it made it mandatory to travel abroad for a period of 3 to 4 weeks, which was not feasible for us. So, we decided to fund the album without any associated label. The promotion was a process that had the support of our friends and fans who contributed so much that the album was promoted.
PD. What do you think about downloading music online?
TC. I think it’s a step forward in musical evolution. The ease of getting music becomes the biggest advantage. In the past it was very difficult to show work to other people. Quality recordings were expensive and their availability had to be in person. The big disadvantage is the free availability of the songs by unauthorized links. However, I think bands should consider custom CDs, DVDs, and merchandising as their selling products.
PD. What song do you wish you’d written and why?
TC. I do not have a particular song like my dream or my desire. I wish I had created a musical style or a trend. I wish I had been the pioneer in creating Doom Metal or even Thrash Metal.
PD. What are some of your pet peeves?
TC. Well, this question is not easy to answer … We liked every moment of our band. From composition, rehearsals, concerts, interviews everything has its own parts. The part that most wears out mentally is the process of promoting our band. How to do it, whom to, when to do it. All this takes time for what we really like to do, which is to play music.
PD. What is your proudest moment in music?
TC. Our band is at the beginning of its 2nd phase. The first one was very good, but this one will be even better. The release of our album “Angels and Demons” that was produced by us without any associated label is a feat that we are very proud of. From the artwork to the recording process in Attic HomeStudio. We are very satisfied with our work.
PD. So what are you working on at the moment?
TC. We are always rehearsing the songs of our album, so that in the concerts the songs have all the details we recorded in the studio. We want the songs to be played with rigor and precision and without fail. We also spend some time on the creative process of new tracks. We already have 2 tracks ready and we are working on a 3rd that is still in the initial phase.
PD. Tell us about your next shows and why we should be there.
TC. We are participating in 2 band contests for 2 very good summer festivals in Portugal. The first is the “Vagos Metal Fest”. We are in the selection phase for the semi-finals. Let’s see if we can … I think so. The second is the “Milagre Metaleiro” that we were compiled for the final on August 4th. Our concerts are always full of strength and energy. Our musicality is broad and has the main objective of transmitting energies to the public. To conclude, thank you for your support and for giving us space on your page.
