The Assist – Interview

Interview with Pete Devine of Pete’s Rock News and Views (

PD: What type of artist are you?

TA: We’re an indie/alternative five-piece from Walsall in the West Midlands.

PD: Tell us a brief history of yourself.

TA: We’ve been playing music for seven years. It all started in our bedrooms, writing songs, which led to playing gigs. We were lucky enough to get booked for some huge festivals, including Reading and Leeds and the Isle of Wight, while also supporting some of our favourite artists at various other shows.

PD: Who are your musical and non-musical influences?

TA: Musically it would have to be Stone Roses, The Twang and Happy Mondays. Non-musically, football culture/fans and the energy they give for their teams.

PD: What are your dreams and goals?

TA: Our dream is to release our debut album and tour it!

PD: Who writes your songs, what are they about?

TA: Most of our songs are a social commentary on day-to-day things and nights out with the crazy people we meet. Our lead singer, Mikey, pens the lyrics, and the band write the music; it’s a collaborative effort.

PD: How do you promote your band and shows?

TA: We’re active across all social media platforms and are always trying to network and build connections. We try to get our friends on board, so we can promote from within, while also making new friends along the way.

PD: What do you think about downloading music online?

TA: We think it’s better than streaming, as more money goes to the band, but unfortunately, it does seem to be dying out. There is less need for people to download music while a whole catalogue of their favourite tunes are available at our fingertips.

PD: What song do you wish you’d written and why?

TA: Fools Gold because it instantly gets everyone in a dancing mood.

PD: What are some of your pet peeves?

TA: Bands following you on Twitter, then instantly unfollowing!

PD: What is your proudest moment in music?

TA: Our proudest moment would have to be playing in Russia at the Ural Music night festival in front of over 12,000 people. We love travelling, and to say our music got us booked all over the world is massive for us.

PD: So what are you working on at the moment?

TA: Our debut album is due to be released on the 8th of April, so at the moment, we’re doing non-stop promo!

PD: What music have you available online and where can we buy it from?

TA: We have an Ep and a couple of singles out at the moment, but you can pre-order the debut album from our website
