Interview with Reilly Williams (Drummer with Supermodel Taxidermy) and Pete Devine of Pete's Rock News and Views (http://petesrocknewsandviews.com)
PD: How would you describe yourself or your band as an artist?
RW: My name is Reilly Williams. I am currently the drummer for our band Supermodel Taxidermy. I would say the best way to describe us would be a good mix of thrash and punk music with some metal mixed in. Definitely has all the makings of a crossover punk band!
PD: Can you tell us briefly about your background – i.e. where you’re from, how you came to make music, etc.
RW: Well for myself, I was born and raised in Fort McMurray located in Alberta, Canada. All 3 of us live and work here at the moment. Our frontman/singer Shawn Maynard is the mastermind behind this unique band collective. During the unfortunate covid 19 outbreak, it shut the world down for a good while but not Shawn. He took the time to think and create what is now known as our EP “A Whorer Story”. After hitting the studio with some hired guns and making the music, our bass player Mike quickly got involved, and then myself. From there we have bonded and played several shows so far. We are currently in the midst of creating our first record together for 2023.
PD: Who and what inspires you to make music, both in terms of musical and other influences? What do you like to write about in your songs?
RW: I can’t speak for my fellow bandmates, but for me, it is and always has been for people! My favorite thing about playing music and performing is getting to meet new people and fans, and getting new inspirations in other bands and albums. My biggest influence from the start was and always will be my father, who has played guitar and been involved musically for many decades. Our songs range from social/political issues to more easy-going themes such as pop culture references. The topics and lyrics of our songs definitely vary.
PD: What are your aspirations as an artist?
RW: At the moment, I’d say for me it is to continue playing with these great guys of Supermodel and keep learning and growing as a musician and player. We currently have our sights on making our first debut album which I stated previously for 2023, and getting out and playing some music festivals next summer!
PD: What is the proudest moment in your music career so far?
RW: So far for me would be our debut live show right here in Fort McMurray back in June of this year. Any chance to do a local show I always love to be a part of, but it was also this band’s very first time playing live and it’s something I will never forget!
PD: Promoting one’s music is such a challenge these days, especially with so many new artists emerging from bedrooms in the day of the home studio. How is that going?
RW: It definitely is a challenge but I believe we are doing a pretty good job thus far! We are making ourselves connected as much as we can via social media, and making sure we take the time to talk to people and fans whenever we can! All of that along with our brand new single and music video for “Blood Painted Dash” is definitely helping us stay current with promotion. We plan on releasing more music and soon our full-length album soon enough!
PD: And how do you book and promote your live shows and tours? Any performances coming up?
RW: We mostly reach out to local and provincial promoters that we find as well as reaching out to big live scenes and clubs. We mostly have promoted through our own band’s Facebook page and our own individual social media accounts, but with the launch of our new website www.supermodeltaxidermy.com we are hoping to reach new heights and connect and promote our music more than ever before!
PD: What do you think about downloading music online? What about streaming sites like Spotify?
RW: Personally, I believe it’s a great thing. It’s definitely easier more than ever to release and create original music. But it’s also tough financially for bands to keep up with so many different sources of music streaming.
PD: Is there anything you don’t like about the music industry, which you would change if you could?
RW: The music industry has gone through a lot of changes and continually changes as the days and years go on. So for me, it’s not technically about like or dislike. It is more about rolling with it and going with the flow.
PD: So, what are you working on at the moment?
RW: Currently working on completing our first debut album together as a band and preparing for recording/touring next year.
PD: Where can we learn more about you and buy your music/merch online?
We are also on Spotify and iTunes! Come bang your heads and check us out!
