Sudden Deaf – Interview

PD: What type of artist are you?

SD: We play what comes to mind and don’t try to define ourselves or put ourselves into a corner but we definitely fall into the heavy rock&roll and metal category.

PD: Tell us the brief history of yourself.

SD: Alex and Drew started playing music together at a young age listening to bands like sabbath and maiden as kids trying to recreate their favorite sounds in Drew’s garage until they met Dylan and Max in high school when we would jam out in the neighbor together.  We were always friends and lived the same neighborhood so when Max’s band broke up and our drummer left it was a no brainer and the sudden deaf lineup was born

PD: Who are your musical and non-musical influences?

SD: We’re influenced by bands like Iron Maiden, Black Sabbath, Motörhead, Thin Lizzy, Pantera also stuff like Tolkien, Lovecraft, Poe, anything that is both genuinely human and epic as all hell the kind of stuff that resonates with the heart mind and soul you can relate to that also makes you feel like you a freaking madman

PD: What are your dreams and goals?

SD: Being able to inspire someone, be it younger or older, to pursue music or just pursue what they want in life with the the full ferocity of their soul and fervor of heart

Also to sell out the outside stage at Mohawk, we’ve seen so many of our heroes play that stage; dweezil Zappa, the sword, the Melvin’s, black angels, and of course local warriors The Boleys and The Deadcoats,  and it would be an honor to perform there.

PD: Who writes your songs, what are they about?

SD: Our songs usually start with Dylan, Drew, or Alex introducing a riff to the band. We’ll take that riff and explode ideas onto  it. Then after a carcass is created, Max will conjure his percussion part. Our songs evolve throughout the entire process. Lyrics bring in themes from everyday life; maybe a piece of a conversation you had, a random idea may spark from something you heard on the radio or a line from a book or something you heard on tv, finding inspiration from inner and universal struggles between right and wrong, good and evil, and living life to your fullest potential no holds barred and not looking back.

PD: How do you promote your band and shows?

SD: We mostly promote our band though instagram and facebook, the standard stuff. But our favorite way to promote is to go out and meet the people in the thick of it, at your own shows and others, connect with people, and play your set live till it’s iron hot.

PD: What do you think about downloading music online?

SD: We think anyway someone wants to consume music is great, streaming is cool, but if you really want to support a band downloading is the better way to go. Also we are all lovers of physical media; vinyl, cd, etc; and that is definitely the best way to support.

PD: What song do you wish you’d written and why?

SD: “Over and over” by Black Sabbath, not just one of the greatest guitar solos I’ve ever heard but there’s so much more it’s not just a man playing guitar it’s a man’s soul bleeding through a guitar

PD: What are some of your pet peeves?

SD: General disrespect to people in general, but in regards to musicians people that behave in a way that they think they’re better that anyone else. Anyone willing to get on stage and express their art deserves respect.

PD: What is your proudest moment in music?

SD: We’re all close friends and have known each other a long time so getting to write, perform, and record with our best friends and how we work together as a group, allowing everyone to put in their open input and bounce ideas off each other we feel leads to the best possible creation. It’s something we don’t take for granted.

PD: So what are you working on at the moment?

SD: We’re working on our debut album, it’s currently in the end phases of being tracked and can be expected sometime later in the year

PD: What music have you available online and where can we buy it from?

SD: Our debut single ‘Headhunter’ premieres this Friday 2/18 and you can find that where music is available online
