Interview with Pete Devine of Pete’s Rock News and Views (http://petesrocknewsandviews.com)
PD: What type of artist are you?
(Symeon). Hello and thank you for the chance you have given to us to talk about Subfire. We are a metal band from Athens, Greece and we play power metal music with heavy and epic riffs.
PD: Tell us the brief history of yourself.
(Symeon). The band has been active since 2004 and i am the only remaining member from that time. After a long process trying to find our musical identity and solid band members, both musically and individually, our musical style finalized in 2021 with the release of our upcoming album ‘Define the Sinner’ on September 10th 2021 by Symmetric Records. The band is consisted by me (Symeon Sanidas – drums), by George Larentzakis (guitars, backing vocals) since 2012, by Rindra Rado (bass) since 2014 and by Veandok (vocals) since 2021.
PD: Who are your musical and non-musical influences?
(George). We respect all kinds of music but we do have preference to metal artists. Our main Influences are really very classic! Iced earth, Judas Priest, Helloween, Blind Guardian etc. But also I am personally attached by the Japanese style (Galneryus, X Japan)! In time I am thinking of incorporating it a little more in my compositions! The result is unique at the moment, so stay tuned!
PD: What are your dreams and goals?
(George). We are a band that has played only in Greece, we have dreams for the future. One of our biggest dreams is to perform in Japan, I believe is the dream of every band. In addition there are also places we would like to visit and play such as Wacken festival or Rio and Australia and of course Scandinavia and England. Of course, at some point, we would like to live by our music and have incomes from the sales of it. Also for us, to make our music travel worldwide is something that makes us very thrilled, we will see what will happen. For now, we remain focus to our goal, to the release of our album and after that, with careful steps, we hope to achieve our desires.
PD: Who writes your songs, what are they about?
(George). The songs are written by me while the melodic vocal lines by Symeon. First comes the inspiration of the basic structure of the songs and on this composition we add the melodic vocal line and the lyrics. Of course there are a few more corrective steps until the final version of the songs, but most of the time this is how we work.
(Symeon). I write most of the lyrics and the vocal lines. Sometimes George writes too and we combine the result. Every lyric of each song has its own story, that depends on the music. I write when the music is ready and I add the lyrics into the songs. The music that George writes drives me to write many situations. It could be about the result of a battle and the impact that has in a soldier’s mental state for example, or it could be the inner struggle of a man with himself when he returns home from war, or it could be an internal wandering when he seeks for divine signs that could explain things etc. Of course, I try to end things with a positive note when I write, it is not my intension to write ‘dark’ and ‘doom’ songs, I want the reader, when he reaches the end of the lyric lines, to feel hopeful and with good energy.
PD: How do you promote your band and shows?
(George). Through our label “Symmetric Records” by Bob Katsionis, our social media especially Bandcamp and last but not least our b@d@ss team “Angels PR Music Promotion” !
PD: What do you think about downloading music online?
(Symeon). Downloading music is like ‘killing’ the music of the artist. When an artist decides to create music, a huge amount of money and time is spent in order to have to best result, is a profession. And you need your fan to respect your work and buy your music as a reward for your effort, that is the whole point. When you download, you don’t respect the artist and the music you love. It is something that frightens us a lot and we urge people to buy music to help and support.
PD: What song do you wish you’d written and why?
(Symeon). One of my personal favourites is the song ‘Bright Eyes’ from Blind Guardian from the album ‘Imaginations from the other side’. I think that this song has everything. Perfect creation, ‘killng’ vocal lines, beautiful backing keyboards and terrific guitar solos, it’s also very emotional and I have seen Blind playing this live and it was amazing.
PD: What are some of your pet peeves?
(Symeon). We are as perfectionists as we can be.
PD: What is your proudest moment in music?
(Symeon). This one. All those years practising and working more and more, the result is our upcoming album, this is our price.
PD: So what are you working on at the moment?
(George). Symeon and myself have almost done the writing of our second album and at this period we try to organize our future plan about recordings etc.
PD: Tell us about your next shows and why we should be there.
(Symeon, George). We are in the talks about live shows the following autumn or winter but nothing is official yet, the album must be released first. ‘Define the Sinner’ marks the beginning of an era for Subfire and it is something special for us because after years of working and trying harder and harder, our moment has come, and trust us, our fans will not be disappointed. So stay tuned, stay safe, stay metal and see you soon. Bye!!
