Stonus – Interview

Interview with Pete Devine of Pete’s Rock News and Views (

PD: What type of artist are you?

S: Hey and thanks for the interview!

We are Stonus, a heavy rock band from the Mediterranean island of Cyprus and we play heavy rock. We are independent artists but we do release our vinyl records through Electric Valley Records.

PD: Tell us the brief history of yourself.

S: We were formed in 2015 and since then we have released 3 EPs (‘Supertrip’ in 2017, ‘Lunar Eclipse’ in 2018, ‘Séance’ in 2021) and our debut album ‘Aphasia’ in March 2020. We are an active band and we had the honour to participate in festivals and gigs all around Cyprus and London as well as participating in Soundart Festival in Romania. We played alongside with some of the best bands of the scene such as Nightstalker, Planet of Zeus, Riverside and Sunnata. Following the release of ‘Aphasia’ we were planning our first European tour, which unfortunately had to be postponed due to COVID-19.

PD: Who are your musical and non-musical influences?

S: In terms of music we are really influenced by heavy music with a more desert vibe including bands like Black Sabbath and Kyuss, and more experimental/progressive bands such as Gojira and Tool. As for outside music we are mostly influenced from all forms of art but I would say mainly drawing and poetry. We love artists like Salvador Dali, Leonardo Da Vinci, Jim Morrison, Alex Grey amongst others.

PD: What are your dreams and goals?

S: Our dream is for our music to be heard all around the world and hopefully people might use it to feel, to party, to cry and to connect. We want to prove that anyone can achieve their dreams if they work hard enough and stay focused. We really feel honoured from the support and love we receive.

PD: Who writes your songs, what are they about?

S: We start off with a riff sequence often written by Nicky (rhythm guitarist) we press record and we jam around it. After we are done we listen and discuss the ideas and concept  of the song. The lyrics are mostly written by our lead singer Kyriacos and they talk about social and personal issues that irritate us. What we want is to pass some messages through our music so that people are more aware and conscious and they realise the important things in life. We want them to chase their dreams and freedom.

PD: How do you promote your band and shows?

S: Nowadays we use social media platforms to promote and spread the word but you might also see some posters and stickers here and there.

PD: What do you think about downloading music online?

S: It makes sense since we do everything online. Its good in terms of getting a broader reach and spreading the word faster as well as being more sustainable. On the other hand the bands earn way less money through digital music as most people use certain music platforms which are not very keen in sharing big amounts of their profits. People still support by buying other merch such as t-shirts, patches and posters.

PD: What song do you wish you’d written and why?

S: We admire great artists but we believe in uniqueness. So the answer would be none but our music as we truly believe in it and in the end is what makes everyone special; being themselves.

PD: What are some of your pet peeves?

S: We hate racism and bullying. Everyone deserves equal opportunities and must be treated with respect. Every human being should be allowed to flourish and every form of life must be embraced.

PD: What is your proudest moment in music?

S: I would say when we played in Bucharest, Romania in Soundart Festival were we played for the first time in a festival abroad with big bands in the stoner rock scene such as Planet of Zeus, Riverside, Sunnata and Weedpecker.

PD: So what are you working on at the moment?

S: We just released our new EP “Séance” last month but we are always writing down ideas and experimenting with them… With the pandemic it has been harder to jam together but we still send some clips here and there and try to work as much as we can. We are productive and pretty active so fans should expect quite a few releases in the years to come.

PD: What music have you available online and where can we buy it from?

S: So far we have released a 2 singles “Coming In” and “Sweetspot” in 2017 and 2019 respectively. We released 3 EPs to date: “Supertrip” (2017) “Lunar Eclipse” (2018) and “Séance” (2021) and our debut album “Aphasia” in 2020. Our music is streaming in all music Platforms including Youtube, Spotify, Apple Music, Amazon Music, Google Play and many more.
