Stone Sea – Interview

Interview with Pete Devine of Pete’s Rock News and Views (http://petesrocknewsandviews.com)

PD: What type of artist are you?

SS: We’re an alternative rock band that incorporate elements of many different styles into our sound, such as Stoner/Doom, Bossa Nova, and Psychedelia.

PD: Tell us the brief history of yourself.

SS: The band is the brainchild of our guitarist and vocalist Elvis Suhadolnik Bonesso, who formed the band in Sau Paulo, Brazil in 2015. The first album ‘Origins’ was recorded in full by Elvis and released in 2015. Shortly after that, Elvis moved to Ireland and reformed Stone Sea as a 3 piece, who then recorded 2 EPs, ‘Vaporizer’ and ‘Mankind Maze’. In 2019, the lineup changed which saw the introduction of Connor Middleton (drums) and Jonathan Parminter (bass).

PD: Who are your musical and non-musical influences?

SS: I don’t think there’s a single Rock/Metal band out there that doesn’t take inspiration from Black Sabbath in some way. Some personal musical influences would be Type O Negative, Testament and Insomnium.

PD: What are your dreams and goals?

SS: The difference between dreams and goals is that dreams are for the most part unattainable desires. We’re a very driven band, so we’re focused on our short and long term goals, which are to share our music with as many people as possible, tour to different territories, and ultimately make a living for ourselves with our passion for our band.

PD: Who writes your songs, what are they about?

SS: The main ideas and lyrics are usually brought to the rehearsal studios by Elvis, but every member of the band puts their stamp on our sound.

Many of our songs are about society, the nature of the universe, and human emotions. But like all art, it’s always best when you can derive your own meaning from our music.

PD: How do you promote your band and shows?

SS: We try to keep our social media pages as up to date as possible, it’s the easiest way to reach our audience these days.

PD: What do you think about downloading music online?

DD: It’s a really tricky subject. On one hand, our music is readily accessible to people across the globe via Spotify, Apple Music, YouTube, etc. Which is of course a great opportunity for us to share our music. But on the other hand, online downloading and streaming makes it difficult for bands to make money from their music. You see some bands touring for months at a time because they need to make ends meet, because their primary sources of income are shows and merch. The industry is definitely a very different place than it was 30-40 years ago.

PD: What song do you wish you’d written and why?

SS: ‘Holy Wars… The Punishment Due’. Its quite different in style to our own music, but it’s gotta be one of the best metal songs ever written. The recognisable riff, the powerful lyrics, the solo that makes your heart race. Every fan of heavy music knows that song.

PD: What are some of your pet peeves?

SS: People who chew with their mouth open… Noisy eaters… People who talk with their mouth full…

PD: What is your proudest moment in music?

SS: Our best show, it would have been the ‘Mankind Maze’ EP launch gig last November. We had support from two other Irish bands, Callous Crows and Red Sun Alert. There was a great turnout, great crowd and the energy in the venue was fantastic. Gigs like that always remind us why we put so much time and effort into Stone Sea, it’s our passion.

PD: So what are you working on at the moment?

SS: We’re currently working on a new album to be released towards the end of this year. Like every work, it will differ slightly from its predecessors. But it’s still going to have the same grooviness and heaviness as what came before it.

PD: Tell us about your next shows and why we should be there.

SS: We’re super excited to play Bloodstock: Metal2TheMasses in Fibber Magee’s on the 14th of March. Its a competition that gives bands a chance to play at Bloodstock Festival in the UK. We always enjoy ourselves when we perform, and that feeling of happiness extends to the crowd. It’s a great feeling to know that people watching us enjoy themselves as much as we do!
