Spylights – Interview

Interview with Pete Devine of Pete’s Rock News and Views (

PD: What type of artist are you?

S: Overall we are a rock band, but we have many different feels and styles that we blend together in our music to make it more interesting. Our musical moods and styles can vary from different types of alternative rock, singersongwriter, progressive rock and metal, contemporary rock, and even electronic music and dark synthwave at points!

PD: Tell us the brief history of yourself.

S: Even though we are a very new band, this project basically for years has been coming together. After my last band The Scorseses called it quits in 2015 after a good 5 year run, I was so sick and tired of always giving it my all and the floor always still falling out from under me on my dreams. I decided to start writing and recording songs full time in my living room as a musical recluse for years, and now finally I have such a talented group of musicians to join me on this beautiful journey!

PD: Who are your musical and non-musical influences?

S: My main musical influences are taken from so many different artists over the last 70 years, but I can tell you some of the main ones. I grew up in the 80s on classic rock, hard rock, and hair metal but some my favorite and most influential artists growing up were Queen, Iron Maiden, Michael Jackson, Boston, James Taylor, Motown classics, 50s music, and I loved 80s contemporary singersongwriter stuff!

PD: What are your dreams and goals?

S: To be able to take this as far as it will possibly go and show the world what we can do by writing music that truly moves people and doesn’t follow the temptation of biting passing trends.

PD: Who writes your songs, what are they about?

S: I wrote the all of the songs and material that we have now and are currently working on, but now that we have a full band I’m sure everyone will be putting in their input and taking some responsibility in songwriting for Spylights in the very near and not so distant future.

The songs are mainly about appreciating life and overcoming personal demons to be able to do that.

Strength, integrity, positivity, and humanity!

PD: How do you promote your band and shows?

S: Through our friends, word of mouth, social media, and with the power of our music!

PD: What do you think about downloading music online?

S: Even though it is the reason that already broke and slighted starving artists have lost sustainability in record sales in the last 2 decades and have not been able to pay back the recoup to their labels because of that..

It’s good exposure for newer and less popular bands who need their name to spread into other ears that normally wouldn’t har them on a worldwide level. Even though it’s super convenient and awesome for the average consumer music lover, streaming services and music downloads have definitely devalued the worth of a band’s product, efforts, finances, and music over the last 20 years.

PD: What song do you wish you’d written and why?

S: I know it’s a very popular subject right now with The Queen movie gaining a household name but I definitely would have to say Bohemian Rhapsody.

Iconic, well written, progressive, a musical masterpiece, and holds a very dear place in my overly nostalgic heart!

PD: What are some of your pet peeves?

S: Can’t stand the constant complainers in life who don’t understand or appreciate how precious it truly is.

I also can’t stand lyrics that are overly used, generic, or that were written poorly with haste.

PD: What is your proudest moment in music?

S: When either the ones who you respect as your idols and influences validate you as an artist, or when your music truly touches someone’s heart deeply and it moves them.

PD: So what are you working on at the moment?

S: We just released our first single “The Empath” on all music platforms are about to release our debut EP soon as well!

We are also tightening up our set for live shows and we are also currently shooting some music videos for both of our singles!

PD: Tell us about your next shows and why we should be there.

S: Our next show also happens be our first show as a full band playing live!

We won’t be booking anything until we are 100 % tight and ready for war, so we promise not to disappoint with our live show!
