Interview with Pete Devine of Pete’s Rock News and Views (http://petesrocknewsandviews.com)
PD: How would you describe yourself or your band as an artist?
SE: Sorrow enthroned is an extreme metal band taking elements from black metal, death metal, and brutal death metal. The music is raw and aggressive.
PD: Can you tell us briefly about your background – i.e. where you’re from, how you came to make music, etc.
SE: I am from Connecticut, usa, there isn’t much here it’s a pretty depressing state. Id entertain myself by playing guitar, I have been playing for about 15 years and just recently started songwriting.
PD: Who and what inspires you to make music, both in terms of musical and other influences? What do you like to write about in your songs?
SE: Musically I draw inspiration from bands like morbid angel, suffocation, dying fetus, the black dahlia murder, dissection, dark funeral, vulvodynia etc. I suffer from mental health problems so when im in a depressive spell I channel it into music. I also get inspired by reading grimoires and books on the occult. This all translates into the lyrics and music.
PD: What are your aspirations as an artist?
SE: This has always been an outlet for me, I want to keep releasing music and to keep fine tuning the sound.
PD: What is the proudest moment in your music career so far?
SE: I am proud of all my work, but I feel like my proudest moment will be the release of the next album, I put a lot more effort into it than anything else ive done and there are a lot of emotions tied to it.
PD: Promoting one’s music is such a challenge these days, especially with so many new artists emerging from bedrooms in the day of the home studio. How is that going?
SE: I am one of those bands, I have had to learn and navigate the music industry on my own. At first it felt like I had bitten off more than I could chew but over the years I am slowly learning.
PD: And how do you book and promote your live shows and tours? Any performances coming up?
SE: I have only been offered to play a festival one time, but its hard finding band members where I am.
PD: What do you think about downloading music online? What about streaming sites like Spotify?
SE: Unfortunately the streaming services aren’t going anywhere so its pointless to complain about it. I personally don’t really make money off the band and so it has never been about the money for me. Sometimes I put more into the band than I get out of it, and I don’t mind because its very therapeutic for me. Of course this is only my personal opinion. More money on each stream would benefit the artists though for sure, that would be nice.
PD: What song do you wish you’d written and why?
SE: Dragged by a truck by Sanguisugabogg. That band is killing it right now and I love everything they’ve done. The riffs are super catchy and heavy and its just the type of death metal I like.
PD: Is there anything you don’t like about the music industry, which you would change if you could?
SE: I feel like I don’t really know enough about it to accurately comment. If anything id change my location if I could to an area with a better death metal scene
PD: So, what are you working on at the moment?
SE: Right now I am working on my 3rd full length. My first album was mostly black metal and dealt with topics like depression and suicide, and my second album was more blackened death metal and dealt with occultism. This next album will have better production and will be a death metal album through and through with much more violent subject matter.
PD: Where can we learn more about you and buy your music/merch online?
