Sophia Garvey – Interview

Interview with Pete Devine of Pete’s Rock News and Views (http://petesrocknewsandviews.com)

PD: What type of artist are you?

SG: I’d say probably indie rock but I love the idea of being a Rockstar- I mean who doesn’t I swear every child wanted to be one at some point. I’m honest and brutal with my lyrics and I like the write things that will help other people deal with things that we’ve all been through.

PD: Tell us the brief history of yourself.

SG: I’ve lived abroad for most of my life, first Dubai and then Singapore. Music first became a thing in Dubai where I sang in a covers band and begged my dad to buy me a guitar. I was writing songs pretty consistently and with the Help of songwork international, recording them too. I moved back to the UK in 2020 and then recorded Post Break Up Sex the summer of 2021.

PD: Who are your musical and non-musical influences?

SG: My musical influences are Lana Del Rey, Lily Allen, Arctic monkeys and Mac Miller- I take from each artist something different and I love how it all works together. My non-musical influence would probably be my dad. Annoying to admit but he had a pretty heavy hand in defining my musical taste. I remember being at the airport with him once and we made a playlist and he introduced me to some amazing older artists as well as random up and coming ones too. I send all my music to him as soon as its recorded too. So dad if you are reading this – thanks.

PD: What are your dreams and goals?

SG: I would love to go on tour- as an opening act or as myself and I’d Love to play at Glastonbury. I feel like everyone in the UK grew up with Glastonbury or has been and I know that when I get the chance to play it, I’ll know I’ll have made it. I love Travelling and I would love touring as its both performing and travelling and how can you say no!!

PD: Who writes your songs, what are they about?

SG: I Write my songs- they are about things happening in my life or things that have affected me. I am very honest lyrically because I know that what I’m going through so many before have been through too and I want to help those who are feeling the same as I am.

PD: How do you promote your band and shows?

SG: All social media platforms- I actually really enjoy posting random things on them and it helps to remain in constant contact with those who want to listen to your music and those who are invested in how you live.

PD: What do you think about downloading music online?

SG: Why not? I don’t mind where you listen as long as you want to listen really.

PD: What song do you wish you’d written and why?

SG: Stairway to heaven by Led Zeppelin. I was obsessed for this song for ages, even did my whole GCSE art project about it. The song is just spiritual really It hits the spots. Lyrically and instrumentally, it goes above and beyond. I recon when it was written the band just sat in awe.

PD: What are some of your pet peeves?

SG: People chewing with their mouths open is a huge one for me- actually makes me feel sick. Pretty please chew with your mouths closed.

PD: What is your proudest moment in music?

SG: Writing My new single Post Break Up Sex. Once it was recorded and the vocals finished, I just sat and listened to it on repeat. Everything about it felt so right and in that moment, I felt like I was one step closer to making it.

PD: So what are you working on at the moment?

SG: I’m currently writing an album with Matthew Parkes for a company in America called Scope. I think it’s set to be released early September and maybe there will be a cheeky single or two released before.

PD: What music have you available online and where can we buy it from?

SG: I have 3 songs released on all major streaming platforms called Ink, would you mind and wanna feel which you can stream, buy and download. If you check out my SoundCloud, there’s all sorts of shite on there. There’s a few tracks from younger angsty me complaining about the world which are entertaining to listen to if you get the chance.
