Son of a Pixel – Interview

Interview with Pete Devine of Pete’s Rock News and Views (

PD: What type of artist are you?

P: Well, to be completely upfront, SON OF A PIXEL is a “one-man band”, in the middle of finding a full live performance line-up. So here’s a shameless plug – if you know or are a drummer in Copenhagen, Denmark area, you should totally let us know of your existence ! #callme

PD: Tell us the brief history of yourself.

P: I’m Peter and I’ve been into music as a hobby since I was 15, when I picked up my first guitar. Fast forward 11 years, it’s 2020 and I’ve self-produced a 6-track record that I branded as “SON OF A PIXEL”.

Perhaps that was too brief, must’ve skipped a few steps in there…

PD: Who are your musical and non-musical influences?

P: I love the way you put that question, cause as bizarre as it may seem to some, my music is mostly inspired by non-musical things. Mostly, the music is a pure reflection of my personality and interests. It’s inspired by video games, software development, a nerdy way of being, social interactions, stories and other forms of art and such.

If I were to pinpoint some musical inspirations, it’d be in a way that I retrospectively compare my music with other artists. That said, I like to think of my project as “A talentless version of Devin Townsend”, “Gojira about video games”, “Jinjer with 8-bit sounds”, “Igorrr but less weird” and “Simplified version of The Algoritm”

PD: What are your dreams and goals?

P: Various levels of goals, naturally, the standard band/ career you’d hear everyday. Set-up a line-up, play shows, make records, go on tours, live off music.

The best and worst goal of this project is to build a community. I mean, look at Dance Gavin Dance fans, who are completely immersed in their story and art ! They’re one of my role models in this area ! But how do you know you’re there ? Never, really. Worst goal. 😀

PD: Who writes your songs, what are they about?

P: The songs vary in message and concepts, but they always start from a core idea. The concept of the debut 6-track record “PA55 7H3 5AL7” had been to address the relationship between analog and digital. The idea behind the record name, is an AI learning human specific behaviour, in this case mannerisms, which I think is pretty funny, but also  highlights the idea of evolving.

PD: How do you promote your band and shows?

P: Music promotion is a huge part of being the “pusher” of a band, whatever the genre. The idea is to put out content that’s engaging and reflects the story of the project. So, I try all kinds of wacky stuff, with some great music videos, behind-the-scenes content, videos where I ask my audience for feedback for new songs and others.

Pitching to Spotify user curated playlists is also a big one for me ! As long as the playlists are within your music niche, they’re pretty likely to accept it and each stream from each source builds up !

I think it’s also important to be in control of the communication means with your audience. For instance, I use Instagram, Facebook & a mailing list to communicate with my audience. They’re concise but varied enough to work. I mean, I wouldn’t know where to even start with something like Twitter or TikTok. I try to focus on what I can handle.

PD: What do you think about downloading music online?

P: Hey ! Music is virtually free ! It is a means of building a brand with an audience, which will further invest in other things you provide – merch, gigs, backstage passes, exclusive content, services of companies spawned from the brand etc.

So it’s fair play to me !

PD: What song do you wish you’d written and why?

P: I wish I wrote the perfect combination of a complex masterpiece and a pop-hit. You know, like “Genesis” from Devin Townsend.

PD: What are some of your pet peeves?

P: Hearing other people chewing loudly. Lol.

PD: What is your proudest moment in music?

P: Must’ve been the release of the video for the song “Through Ozone”, as it’s one of the coolest low-budget music videos ever. It includes me on my couch, playing a video-game, featuring footage from a really cool survival space game called “Breathedge”, playing along, twitch streaming type overlays and chat, as well as guitar hero-esc footage that plays along to the track. The whole thing is a lot of fun !

PD: So what are you working on at the moment?

P: New songs dude ! And getting the line-up ready … Maybe with you, the reader ? wink wink

PD: What music have you available online and where can we buy it from?

P: The debute 6-track EP is available ! Follow the links or type in SON OF A PIXEL somewhere and you’ll hopefully find it !
