Solitary Interview
Interview with Drummer Roy (Royston) Miller and Pete Devine of Pete’s Rock News and Views (http://petesrocknewsandviews.com)
Q1. What type of artist are you.
I’m the drummer in the thrash metal band Solitary.
Q2. Tell us a brief history of yourself.
Solitary were formed in 1994 and released their 1st album “Nothing Changes” in 1998 I moved up from Essex (250 miles away) to join the band in 1999 when we began writing for our 2nd album “Requiem” which was released in 2008. Since then we have released a live album “I promise to thrash forever” in 2014 and earlier this year we released our latest album “The diseased heart of society”
Q3. Who are your musical influences.
For me the main 2 are Slayer and The Haunted
The ultimate goal is to carry on doing what we do. We’ve been going for 23 years and never really stopped
Q4. What are your dreams and goals.
The ultimate goal is to carry on doing what we do. We’ve been going for 23 years and never really stopped and hopefully have no plans to anytime soon! As for dreams apart from playing some of the bigger festivals I’d love to do some shows with The Haunted. I’d like to think that’s a dream that can become reality.
Q5. Who writes the songs and what are they about.
Generally Rich or Andy will come in to rehearsal with some riffs and we start building from there. We all have our own input and say on what we like.
As for what they are about, that all depends on what inspires Rich at the time he’s writing his lyrics.
Q6. How do you promote your band and shows?
We have the usual social media pages (solitary.offical on Facebook and solitarypreston on twitter) and our website solitary.org.uk where you can also get all our Merch. We also have Chris and Paul from Imperative Pr who manage us and do a great job of getting our name out there.
It’s not something I agree with, as an independent band we work very hard and spend a lot of money to produce our albums
Q7. What do you think about downloading music online?
It’s not something I agree with, as an independent band we work very hard and spend a lot of money to produce our albums and we rely on album sales to help fund our next project.
Q8. What’s your outlook on the record industry today.
It’s struggling because people seem to think music should be free so labels are less willing to take a chance and heavily invest in a smaller band because they know 9 times out of 10 they aren’t going to see a return on their investment.
Q9. What song do you wish you’d written and why?
I’d say Angel of death. Its the perfect album opener and just sets the tone for what follows. It’s also the song I played at my audition to join Solitary.
Q10. What are some of your pet peeves.
People being late. I know sometimes it can’t be help but it you agree to meet me at a certain time I’ll be there 10mins before so at the least have the decency to arrive on time.
Q11. What is your proudest moment in music.
Any time we release a new album.
Q12. Tell us about your next shows and why we should be there.
Our next set of shows start on the 7th Oct in Birmingham at scruffy murphys with our thrash friends in incinery. We’re also doing the following:
11th Nov McLeans Pentre
17th Nov The snooty fox Wakefield
29th Nov Trillians Newcastle
3rd Dec ebgbs Liverpool.
