I was thinking of saying “fourth time is the charm”, but that would imply that the previous 3 were at best charmless, and that would be unfair to the Social Scream. Instead, I will straight up say that I absolutely enjoyed their previous work, but with the “ΔΕΙΝΟΝ ΕΣΤΙ”, Social Scream have reached new heights. And the fact that I am able to say something like this shows only musical progress, growth and evolution by the band.
Still, our discussion for the “ΔΕΙΝΟΝ ΕΣΤΙ” will happen on the same musical basis. When I talked of progress and evolution, I didn’t mean that the Social Scream abandoned their musical path to follow other more complex or experimental, but rather they developed further their signature heavy metal sound. They love the 90’s metal, and that love and passion is transferred undiluted into their music. Social Scream want to play a 90’s inspired heavy metal and they definitely should, since they do this crazily good. It’s not easy to trigger a feeling of nostalgia with your music and in the “ΔΕΙΝΟΝ ΕΣΤΙ”, the nostalgic feeling, along with the killer riffs, is dominant.
Social Scream turn their gaze towards the other side of the Atlantic and they seem to be influenced by 90’s metal bands like the Iced Earth and Pantera, forming a heavy/thrash sound with groovier elements that enrich the band’s rhythmic section. Without lacking solos, the “ΔΕΙΝΟΝ ΕΣΤΙ” is more riff focused, so it’s only logical for the Social Scream to want to spice up the riffs with some dry, metal groove.
In the “ΔΕΙΝΟΝ ΕΣΤΙ” the Social Scream revive the late 80’s and 90’s sound, though it is slightly reshaped and reformed so that it sounds fresh, relatable and vibrant. Since their first album “Epiclesis”, the band has grown and evolved both musically and technically. This year the Social Scream return triumphant, unleashing their most complete and mature work so far.
