Interview with Pete Devine of Pete’s Rock News and Views (http://petesrocknewsandviews.com)
PD: What type of artist are you?
Slowpoke: We are a stoner/doom/psychedelic trio.
PD: Tell us the brief history of yourself.
Slowpoke: As a band, we formed in 2018. Cam and Ben met online, shortly after Ben moved to Newfoundland from Toronto. The two started writing songs and began searching for a drummer, which is when Adam joined the band. We just released our self titled debut! Go check it out at www.slowpokeband.com or on all major services.
PD: Who are your musical and non-musical influences?
Slowpoke: Kyuss, Clutch, The Melvins, Black Sabbath, and many more. The human condition, shared experiences and philosophy. The emotional impact of day-to-day life experiences.
PD: What are your dreams and goals?
Slowpoke: A goal that right now is to do a second album and tour outside of our province. A dream would be able to live comfortably playing music and sustain ourselves while making the best music that we can.
PD: Who writes your songs, what are they about?
Slowpoke: We all contribute to the songs musically, Ben contributes the lyrics. They are typically addressing day to day experiences, the human condition and existential journalism.
PD: How do you promote your band and shows?
Slowpoke: We put a lot of attention in picking the bands we perform with. We then push hard on social media to promote events while releasing content to keep people interested.
PD: What do you think about downloading music online?
Ben: It lacks the connection that physical copies have and it changes the way listeners interact with music. Give me convenience or give me death. It is super convenient though.
Cam: I pretty much agree with Ben. In a way it makes music disposable and it makes listeners unappreciative. However, there is some upside to it. I think a lot younger listeners are exposed to cool bands that they otherwise would not have. It’s a double edged sword.
Adam: It makes the listening experience less effective, its so fleeting. You can stream a song and then 10 minutes later not know what it was.
PD: What song do you wish you’d written and why?
Ben: I don’t feel that way about other people’s music.
Cam: I don’t think I have a particular song in mind. Maybe I Walk The Line – Johnny Cash
Adam: Runaway train – Soul Asylum
PD: What are some of your pet peeves?
Ben: People who don’t respect other peoples cultures… and Newfoundland drivers
Cam: People who lack any kind of self criticism
Adam: Feckless drivers
PD: What is your proudest moment in music?
Ben: Paying my bills with it
Cam: Pushing myself to start bands and to be comfortable playing live, and then doing so.
Adam: Having my album released widely!
PD: So what are you working on at the moment?
Slowpoke: We are working on a live recorded set sponsored by Arts NL, looking forward to writing more material and gigging.
PD: Tell us about your next shows and why we should be there.
Slowpoke: We JUST had our big album release show on August 21, 2021 at the Rockhouse in St. John’s, NL. We had a killer lineup of hometown heroes The Birchmen and the return of local legends sHEAVY who hadn’t been on the stage in years. We’re looking at some gigs around Halloween right now too.
