Interview with Pete Devine of Pete’s Rock News and Views (http://petesrocknewsandviews.com)
PD: What type of artist are you?
SR: We are folk metal! We describe that as having traditional folk instruments situated amongst the distorted guitars and the metal drums. Composition and layering are very important.
PD: Tell us the brief history of yourself.
SR: We started in 2014, responding to and posting ads on Craigslist. We had out initial line-up in 2015, and played two shows at the very end of 2015. We really took off in 2016 and went on a short tour in the US and Canada. We have had our current line-up for 2 years. We have had a variety of instruments in the band in the past 7 years and that is something that we are adept at adapting to.
PD: Who are your musical and non-musical influences?
SR: Andy James, Dale Krover, Roy Clarke, The Great Elder God Cthulhu, ChaotH, Cliff Burton, Eivor, Nightwish, Joe Satriani
PD: What are your dreams and goals?
SR: We would love to play Waken Winter Nights and go on a European tour. We want to become recognised in our genre and be able to play some larger shows and festivals.
PD: Who writes your songs, what are they about?
SR: We all write them together. Rena writes all of the lyrics, and we write our songs “old school”, by jamming them out. We don’t have one person sitting at a computer and composing. We’re very collaborative and ride the energy from each other.
PD: How do you promote your band and shows?
SR: We hired PR for this release and there’s a huge difference. You really have to figure out what you can do yourself and what you need to reach out for. We’re learning so much about social media and video, etc. It’s not enough just to put your. Music out online. We learn something every day.
PD: What do you think about downloading music online?
SR: How we consume music has changed so much. I think that in this band we all have our preferred ways of listening- vinyl, CDs, streaming. There are certainly ethical issues with making sure that that energy exchange of compensation for music is there.
PD: What song do you wish you’d written and why?
SR: Ghost Love Score by Nightwish. It’s an incredible composition. It’s an entire journey in itself.
PD: What are some of your pet peeves?
SR: When you show up to a venue and it’s been double or triple booked, or you have been working with a less than honest booker. That’s never uplifting.
PD: What is your proudest moment in music?
SR: When we played with Korpiklanni, and I saw Jonne in the audience, and he smiled at me and nodded. Touring with Scythia was really awesome.
PD: So what are you working on at the moment?
SR: We are starting to write new music, but we’re researching and booking out for festivals and future tours. And of course, trying to figure out Tik Tok and the different ways that we can share our music.
PD: What music have you available online and where can we buy it from?
SR: We have our first two previously released EPs, Beneath the Narrows (2016/2018) and Nightmares from the Abyss (2019). Our first full-length album, Rise Forth, comes out on October 8th!!!!!
