Interview with Pete Devine of Pete’s Rock News and Views (http://petesrocknewsandviews.com)
PD: What type of music are you?
S: Shovelbelt is a mix between heavy rock/blues with a high desert 70’s classic grit.
PD: Tell us the brief history of the band.
S: Shovelbelt was started by Russ Mickel about 8 years ago in Bend Oregon. Rich Cornelison, the guitarist from Russ’s previous 10 year project, LID has played and recorded through-out the building process of Shovelbelt.
PD: Who are your musical and non-musical influences?
S: Influences range from Kyuss, Tool, Cat Stevens, ZZ Top, Blacktop Mojo, Carlos Santana, Jimi Hendrix, Soundgarden, Van Halen, Monster Magnet.
PD: What are your goals as a band?
S: The goals for Shovelbelt are to finish recording the album we started last year. Book at least 14 shows and festivals this year through-out the United States. Then start a European tour early spring 2023.
PD: Who writes your songs?
S: Russ Mickel and Rich Cornelison
PD: How do you promote your band and shows?
S: Definitely through social media first. Our web page is being constructed now to accommodate our new album and merchandise. Our shows in our local areas of Portland Oregon and Bend are promoted through the papers and radio stations.
PD: What do you think about downloading music online?
S: We think it’s a great opportunity to get our music to the masses. We take full advantage of purchasing and downloading other artists music as well.
PD: What song do you wish you’d written and why?
S: We have several tunes we thoroughly enjoy and wish we had taken part in creating such musical masterpieces, but the song that sticks out the most would be “Rusty Cage” by Soundgarden.
PD: What is your proudest moment in music?
S: I think our proudest moment in music during this Shovelbelt era, is hearing “Memories In Stone” on the radio for the first time in Bend Oregon.
PD: So what are you working on at the moment?
S: Right now we are pushing our latest single “Memories In Stone”. We are going back into the studio then hitting the road this summer.
PD: What music have you available online and where can we buy it from?
S: “Memories In Stone” is the latest single that we just released on January 1st. People can stream and download on all the major music platforms, Spotify, I Tunes, Amazon Music etc. @Shovelbelt
