She Made Me Do It – Interview
Interview with Pete Devine of Pete’s Rock News and Views (http://petesrocknewsandviews.com)
PD: What type of artist are you?
PD: Tell us the brief history of yourself.
Shaheena: She Made Me Do It is the epic result of our collaboration ever since we were in the rock band Rachel Stamp. Previous to that I was a competitive Figure Skater.
PD: Who are your musical and non-musical influences?
Shaheena: The Cure, Monster Magnet, Nirvana, Sonic Youth, Depeche Mode, The Chameleons, The Divinyls, Siouxsie, Debbie Harry, Brigitte Bardot, Marilyn Monroe, Louise Brooks, Carole Lombard, Bette Davis, Joan Didion, Sylvia Plath, Tennessee Williams, Sam Shepard, Margaret Atwood, Michael Herr, Marie Colvin, Anthony Loyd, Don McCullin…
PD: What are your dreams and goals?
Shaheena: Keep on writing good songs and playing good gigs, save rhinos and elephants from extinction, save the pangolins, stop live exports, stop the Taiji dolphin slaughter, stop the Faroe island whale slaughter, shut down the bear bile industry, and so much more…
PD: Who writes your songs, what are they about?
Shaheena: We write everything together.
The songs on our latest EP include themes of obsession, alienation, heartbreak, war and PTSD…I’m interested in the savageness of mankind – the more I learn, the more I’m stunned by it – it saddens me but prompts me into action to try and change things / speak up about things I don’t agree with.
PD: How do you promote your band and shows?
Shaheena: Will is good with online communication so he looks after that aspect of things – I’ve had 2 people pretending to be me online in the past so I tend to keep my online presence to a minimum and only sign petitions to save animals and the environment.
PD: What do you think about downloading music online?
Will: It dpends whether you’re paying or not I guess. With streaming there’s virtually no reason to download now so it’s all becoming a bit redundant. Maybe that pushes the focus back to physical releases. It’s almost like it has to go too far the other way to appreciate the original way of listening to recorded music.
PD: What song do you wish you’d written and why?
Shaheena: The sound of silence – the lyrics and the melody are truthful and timeless.
Smells like Teen Spirit – the energy and the angst captured in that song is cathartic.
PD: What are some of your pet peeves?
Will: Animal cruelty and opening doors for people who subsequently completely ignore you.
PD: What is your proudest moment in music?
Shaheena: As part of Rachel Stamp headlining the Astoria unsigned.
I’m happy with our new EP – the best we’ve written yet and expertly mixed by Nat Chan at Kangaroo Moon.
We’ve made a cool video for Bones with Duncan Catterall and we’re about to film another one with him for Broken Morning. We have beautiful artwork by Jeff Conway at Pushing Normal – it all feels right.
PD: So what are you working on at the moment?
Shaheena: We are constantly writing new songs – we are developing a couple of new ones which we worked on in rehearsal today and I need to write more lyrics for them.
PD: Tell us about your next shows and why we should be there.
Shaheena: We’re playing the Finsbury in North London on Feb 25th
