Serenity Broken – Interview

Interview with Pete Devine of Pete’s Rock News and Views (http://petesrocknewsandviews.com)

PD: What type of artist are you?

SB: Ever since I remember myself I remember being fascinated by music, how we can be affected by it and how it can transport us to other places! I have always loved music, and especially writing. I find composing a very cathartic experience, it gives me energy, an outlet to express emotions, feelings etc. Serenity broken is a band that functions exactly like that, we all share the same passion for music and work together to express ourselves through it.

PD: Tell us the brief history of yourself.

SB: Serenity Broken was formed in 2010 by our singer Aris Louziotis, guitarist Andreas Papadopoulos and our then drummer Victoras Passagianidis. Its the classic rock n roll start-up, we knew each other from before and one day all three of us happened to be at Vic’s place where we picked up our instruments and some good #$*% just came out! So we said hey lets start a band! About 2 months after that we booked our first shows, made our first record Commercial Suicide and so on!

PD: Who are your musical and non-musical influences?

SB: Our influences are very different for each member. That’s what is great about Serentiy Broken! My influences (Aris) are classic punk and grunge where Andreas is a hardcore metal fan! For non musical influences I would have to say everyday life, because it’s our time on this planet and what we do with it that shapes us into what we are.

PD: What are your dreams and goals?

SB: The ultimate goal would be to be able to live through music alone!

PD: Who writes your songs, what are they about?

SB: We all write songs for the band, its usually that someone brings an idea or a nearly complete song to the table and we build on that. When I write songs they can be about real life experiences just feelings or the world around us. It truly depends on the song, for example Faint Silt talks about exploitation whereas, Turn Back Time talks about personal loss, Under My Skin is just a plain and simple sex song. Everyone in the world is a complex individual so why talk just about one thing?

PD: How do you promote your band and shows?

SB: We used to do all the promotion ourselves, to a small degree we still do. We have recently started to receive help from Angles P.R and it has helped us out a lot.

PD: What do you think about downloading music online?

SB: If you told anyone 30 years ago that you can pay something like 10-30$ a month and have access to the whole music store they would have thought you were crazy! Music as any art form needs an audience so with the internet bands have the ability to reach thousands of listeners.

PD: What song do you wish you’d written and why?

SB: That’s an interesting question!! My first response would have been “There are just so many!”, but for me, everyone interprets each song in their own way so writing a song and knowing its “true meaning” could ruin my experience of these songs so I’m happy not to have written my favourite songs!

PD: What are some of your pet peeves?

SB: Hot beer & fascists.

PD: What is your proudest moment in music?

SB: When people in the audience sing parts to a song!

PD: So what are you working on at the moment?

SB: We are currently working on our third album, and it’s going to be killer! We try not to repeat ourselves with each album. We want to try to do something different each time!

PD: Tell us about your next shows and why we should be there.

SB: As soon as we complete the album we are going to hit the road promoting the living #$(* out of it! Lots of sweat, tears, joy and beer! Real songs real people!
