Segmentia – Interview

Interview with Jere Luokkamäki – Drums with Segmentia and Pete Devine of Pete’s Rock News and Views (http://petesrocknewsandviews.com)

PD: What type of artist are you?

JL: We are a four-piece pop metal band from Seinäjoki, Finland. We are combining pop music influenced melodies & sounds to metal music (hence the genre title pop metal). Our music tends to be leaning towards more melancholic vibes, like us Finnish people often are when making art, but also hopeful! Short description: Pop Metal from the North 🙂

PD: Tell us the brief history of yourself.

JL: It all begun sometime after I had ended things up with my old band, Celesty. The idea of starting a new band came about and this time with a female vocalist. In the beginning the band just played all kind of music together. For example, some Finnish pop music but also music from Paramore, Nirvana, Avenged Sevenfold, Porcupine Tree and so on. After a while the thought that now is the time to start making some original music again started to grow stronger. It took some time but on 2019 we released our first EP “Shanghai”, in January we are releasing our second EP “Alone”.

PD: Who are your musical and non-musical influences?

JL: I take influences of all kinds of music. Basically, there isn’t genre or style of music what I don’t listen as long as it is a good song. I listen a lot of pop and rock but also black metal and sometimes classical music as well. Usually, I enjoy of the melodies and rhythms which makes me feel something deep or reminds me f.e. from my childhood memories.

Generic stories of people’s life’s are also very inspiring, good books or movies too. Sometimes when I see something interesting in nature my mind can fly to somewhere and I invent a story and this way it might give me idea of some melody or even a whole song. It is quite nice that you never know what kind of a situation will start the idea to a new song or story!

PD: What are your dreams and goals?

JL: In shortish term our goal is to release our next EP “Alone”, but also record and release our debut album and tour as much as possible! Overall, our goal is to be an active, international band and to make some impactful music. While we enjoy making and recording music a lot, playing live is what we truly love. Hence, we dream of touring around the world and playing all the big metal festivals under the sun one day!

PD: Who writes your songs, what are they about?

JL: I have composed all our published songs, but lately our bass player Matti has started to share some song ideas too. Also, our singer Kansana is participating writing lyrics with me, so we are actually more as a group composing our debut.

The stories of the songs are excerpts from the lives of an individual and the humanity in this world. What we have experienced, what we should understand about life while we are here and, above all, what we should appreciate and cherish.

PD: How do you promote your band and shows?

JL: It’s mostly through social media, namely Facebook and Instagram in our case. That’s the name of the game in the 2020’s. However, we feel like the live shows are the best promotional tool in any band’s arsenal. For the music and for future shows as well. In the end it’s the human connection and shared emotions that create the strongest bonds. This applies to bands and their followers as well!

PD: What do you think about downloading music online?

JL: Things are always moving forward, and we can debate whether the change in music business is good or not (and to whom) until the cows come home, but in the end of the day that does not change much of how things are now and in the foreseeable future. It’s better to adapt to the times and look for the new opportunities than get stuck in the past. If the aim is to have a successful career in music, that is! As to us specifically, we are a smaller up and coming band so to us the most important thing is that people hear our music, no matter how they got it in their hands (or ears), but ask us again once we have tens of millions of streams in Spotify and we are selling out Wembley Arena hahah!

PD: What song do you wish you’d written and why?

JL: Well, to be serious there are so many good songs and artists but still I’m not sure could I ever enjoy of my own music as much as I enjoy listening to other bands or artist’s music. I think that music made by others is the source of my inspiration and this is one of the main things when creating my own thing. You just take influences and get inspired and make your own thing.

But if you ask Kansana, she might say that she wanted to be the creator of the song called ”Bury Me Deep Inside” by HIM 😀 And then list a thousand another songs after it.

PD: What are some of your pet peeves?

JL: People that lack empathy and don’t realize that their (shitty) actions may have much more far-reaching consequences than they think. People who choose Not to grow, in music or in life in general.

PD: What is your proudest moment in music?

JL: OMG very difficult question because there is quite many of them, but one popped on my mind and it is the song “Alone” and especially the c-part in it, the orchestral thing and that I’m very proud of. It would be nice to hear a professional orchestra to play that part someday. And also “Remedy” is one of those songs that I am proud of because I composed it in just a one moment from the beginning to an end. The final version is the same that the first demo version was.

PD: So what are you working on at the moment?

JL: We are getting ready for our upcoming shows in Finland in the start of 2023. We have also started demoing some new songs for our upcoming album. So, we are pretty excited about that! One can say that maybe we are going to a little bit darker and heavier direction with those new songs.

PD: What music have you available online and where can we buy it from?

JL: We released our first EP Shanghai in 2019, and the live version of that in 2021. We have three singles out from our next EP Alone, which will be released early next year!
