Sano Hill – Interview

Interview with Pete Devine of Pete’s Rock News and Views (http://petesrocknewsandviews.com)

PD:  How would you describe yourself or your band as an artist?

SH: I’m a singer songwriter who writes melodic rock songs that are influenced by life, love and loss – and my musical and literary influences. I try to bring integrity and emotional honesty to what I do both in composition and performance and hopefully it comes through in the songs.

PD: Can you tell us briefly about your background – i.e. where you’re from, how you came to make music, etc.

SH: I come from an Irish musical family originally from Cavan (a small rural county in South Ulster) – my mother leads a traditional music group still there – so I was always surrounded by music growing up and have been writing my own songs as long as I can remember. I moved to Galway to go to University and have been here ever since and Galway has such a rich music and broader cultural scene – my music has grown out of that background. Though I wasn’t recording or performing for some time and when the pandemic arrived I went back into the studio and have put together my tracks for a forthcoming album.

PD: Who and what inspires you to make music, both in terms of musical and other influences? What do you like to write about in your songs?

SH: I’ve always felt the need to create or perform music – I’m not sure exactly where it’s coming from, well I suppose there is a family background but it’s partly therapy in so far as I write music and songs to interpret and deal with whatever is going on in my life, or stories/experiences I encounter.

PD: What are your aspirations as an artist?

SH: To reach an audience large enough and generous enough to allow me to continue to make music on a regular basis – and to pay the rent as well as the cost of bringing my music together!

PD: What is the proudest moment in your music career so far?

SH: Probably releasing my first single ‘The Climb’ last January – but the release of my forthcoming album may run that close!

PD: Promoting one’s music is such a challenge these days, especially with so many new artists emerging from bedrooms in the day of the home studio. How is that going?

SH: Hard work! I think you just have to keep plugging and eventually your music will connect – there is an audience out there, I’m sure of that but it will take time (and plenty of mistakes!) to reach it.

PD: And how do you book and promote your live shows and tours? Any performances coming up?

SH: I’m working on that at the moment – my focus to date has been on getting the album together which is nearly there and I’m now turning to gigs and touring – hopefully with updates on this soon. I’m working with a local promoter here in Galway who is helping to connect me with venues and bands with a view to a tour in the second half of 2023 after the album comes out.

PD: What do you think about downloading music online? What about streaming sites like Spotify?

SH: So they are all ways of reaching a new audience which is important. However, right now it’s almost impossible unless you are an established musician to get anything like a decent return from streaming – this needs to change.

PD: What song do you wish you’d written and why?

SH: Van Morrison’s ‘Madame George’. A sublime composition and performance that I never get tired of listening to. It’s hard to describe the track or why it impacts me as it does, but in every respect, it’s the perfect song.

PD: Is there anything you don’t like about the music industry, which you would change if you could?

SH: Give artists a decent return from streaming so it is viable to make a living as a recording artist.

PD: So, what are you working on at the moment?

SH: Finalising my 11 track album – titled ‘If Not Now, When’ for release in Spring.

PD: Where can we learn more about you and buy your music/merch online?

SH: You’ll find all my links including to music, reviews, musics videos etc. here: https://linktr.ee/SanoHill
