Runescarred Interview

Runescarred Interview

Interview with Pete Devine of Pete’s Rock News and Views (

PD. What type of artist are you?

R. The artsy kind! We definitely aim to maintain the cathartic hard rock/heavy-fucking-metal edge, but when it boils down to it we all create pieces that raise emotions.  Power, hatred, helplessness – whatever the song, album, solo, fill calls for.  For that we make sure to keep our influences on hand and ready.  We love music. We love film. We can be inspired by anything from Mayhem to Disney’s Frozen. Probably should delete that but i’m too lazy…

PD. Tell us the brief history of yourself.

R. Born. Theater. Film. Acting. Directing. Married. Divorced. Joined Dead Earth Politics. Married again. Degree in Social and Behavioral studies. Founded Runescarred. Writer. Director.

PD. Who are your musical and non-musical influences?

R. Right now Parkway Drive and Ghost are in constant rotation on my playlist, but I love Loreena McKennitt, Elton John (particularly Madman), Morbid Angel, Evil United and Eminem.  Among many others.  Non-music influences right now? Really my wife. She makes me want to be better, so I try. I fail a lot, but damn it if I don’t swallow my tail and start over.

PD. What are your dreams and goals?

R. I want to make music and direct films and be happy. I want to help others direct themselves towards the path they need to follow to achieve their happiness.  I also want to maintain sight of my own.

PD. Who writes your songs, what are they about?

LR. yrically, mainly myself. They range from fun things like haunted ocean barges (Ghost Ocean) to the internal conflict of one who has been gaslit to the point of questioning ever decision they make for themselves that is best for *them*.  Human condition, darkness in the world, light in world. I hit all the cliches and even some subjects that aren’t cliche-y. Cliche-esque? You get what I’m saying.

PD. How do you promote your band and shows?

R. Depends on the show. Footwork is always involved if the show is in Austin or thereabouts. However, I am lucky to have a large network of friends willing to hoof it for us if we are playing in their town as well. Beyond that, I let everyone know. Online – we friends? Check out my band. In person – Nice to meet ya! “What do you do?” Oh, I’m a writer/director and vocalist for RUNESCARRED. Check it out.

Basically I’m a whore.

PD. What do you think about downloading music online?

R’ I think its great and fully support it. If you pay.

PD. What’s your outlook on the record industry today?

R. I have no outlook on the industry anymore. I just want to play and enjoy. I used to be avidly DIY but right now if I were offered a record deal, I would consider it. I have never been on that side of the fence so it ain’t fair for me to cast judgement.

PD. What song do you wish you’d written and why?

R. Anything by Queen. Because – Freddie Mercury.

PD. What are some of your pet peeves?

R. Being interrupted drives me up the fucking wall.

PD. What is your proudest moment in music?

R. Every. Release. Each time I am able to share something that I created with a group of talented assholes, I am filled with pride. And gas. It’s probably mostly gas.

PD. Tell us about your next shows and why we should be there.

R. JUNE 30th – SKUNK FEST @ Come and Take It Live in Austin, TX!

You should be there because it is not only the CD Release for our first E.P., “We Are” – but this is our inaugural performance! A shit ton of bands that kick mad ass and we are a group of dudes who have not been on the stage in over a year. So there will be an energy to this show that will be unparalleled for quite some time.
