Room 24
Andy Cooper, James Caton, and Michael Cooper make up Room 24, an alt-rock/alt-metal 3-piece out of Austin, Texas that has been voted among the top 10 “Best U18 Bands” in The Austin Chronicle’s Austin Music Awards poll the past three years, and won the 7th annual Jam Fest in Austin in 2014. Their EP, Closer To Reality, produced and engineered by Tim Gerron of Gerron Music, has received highly favorable reviews by such music blogs as Jamsphere, The Faulkner Review, and The Independent Spotlight. Room 24 then followed up their EP with the release of two singles, “Again” and “Chaos In Melodies.” The band is scheduled to record their next EP, a 6-track collection entitled, Interweave, in June 2016.
Although clearly influenced by Deftones and Incubus, Room 24 considers their music best described as “melodic alternative” rock. The 3-piece strives for a sound that never reduces to instruments playing conventional chords and expected progressions. Instead, their music is layered and textured, full of melodic lines and harmonic structures. The result is music that sounds and feels much greater than the sum of only 3 individual parts.
Brothers and founding Room 24 band members, Andy (guitar, vocals) and Michael (drums, vocals), have studied music for 17 years between them, and have gigged together as Room 24 for over 3 years.
It was John Moyer, bassist for the Grammy-nominated band, Disturbed, who first arranged for Andy and Michael to combine their talents into a successful, gigging band under the direction and mentoring of professional Austin musician, Jacob Gonzales. When still with Moyer’s Natural Ear Music school, Andy and Michael became friends with fellow student, James (bass), who would periodically jam with them just for fun.
As with many bands, Room 24 has since undergone band member changes, starting first as a 4-piece, then paring down to a 3-piece. Over the summer of 2014, Andy and Michael felt further changes to the band, although difficult, were necessary in order to meet the challenge of achieving new levels with their music. It turned out their friend from back in the Natural Ear Music days, James, was ready to take on a new musical challenge as well and joined Room 24 as the band’s new bass player.
This combination of band members proved to be a genuine success. Room 24 continues writing new music and performing at various live music venues in and around Austin, San Marcos, Dallas, and Houston.
