Rituals – Interview

Interview with Pete Devine of Pete’s Rock News and Views (

PD: What type of artist are you?

R: Rituals hints at a more old school metal style, but with an influence from modern metal production.  There is less focus on effects and samples but more attention on riffs and vocal hooks.

PD: Tell us the brief history of yourself.

R: Rituals formed in 2018 in Newcastle.  Ewan and Lewis met each other at a music college in Newcastle in 2016.  2 years down the line, due to being unable to find a band  that had the sound they wanted to pursue, they formed Rituals.  2020 saw us release 3 singles “P.O.V”, “Snakes Head” and “False Royal” which saw us develop our sound.  There was more of a leaning into heavier riffs but still maintaining the melodic choruses.  These singles were also the first releases for us that showed growth for the band.  We are looking forward to dropping our debut EP “AWAKE” on the 3rd of September.

PD: Who are your musical and non-musical influences?

R: We are influenced by a variety of different music, from the metal scene it is bands like While She Sleeps, Architects, Bury Tomorrow and Bleed From Within but also artists outside of metal like Tom Misch,  Depeche Mode and Oasis.  In terms of non-musical influences, Eddie Hearn, he pays homage to the schedule and has an amazing worth ethic.

PD: What are your dreams and goals?

R: We aim to be the biggest UK metalcore band, our goals are to play Download festival, play Brixton Academy and achieve a top 10 album in the UK charts.  We feel if we aren’t aiming big there’s no point!

PD: Who writes your songs, what are they about?

R: Ewan, our guitar player, writes the bulk of our songs, once the songs are demoed the band comes together and shapes them into a Rituals song.

PD: How do you promote your band and shows?

R: We use social media and we are also part of the Lost Island bookings roster!

PD: What do you think about downloading music online?

R: With the current digital age, downloading and streaming music is becoming the norm.  We as a band still go out and buy CD’s and Vinyl, as we feel you have more of a connection holding the record in your hands as opposed to looking at it through a screen.

PD: What song do you wish you’d written and why?

R: Dancing On The Ceiling by Lionel Ritchie cause it’s just a rager of a tune.

PD: What are some of your pet peeves?

R: Ewan doesn’t like it when people skip songs halfway through in the car.  Lewis doesn’t like people who leave meat on chicken wings “Cause you’ve gotta clean the bone man.”  And Dom has a thing against umbrellas as well as people who say literally when they don’t mean it.

PD: What is your proudest moment in music?

R: When the CD’s for our new EP “AWAKE” arrived knowing the amount of work that had gone into it.

PD: So what are you working on at the moment?

R: We are always working on new music, we currently have a new batch of songs ready to record after “AWAKE” has been released on the 3rd of September.

PD: What music do you have available online and where can we buy it from?

R: All of our previous singles are available on all major music streaming platforms, and pre-orders for merch bundles for our new EP “AWAKE” will be available on our web store on June 11th:
