Ren Marabou – Interview
Interview with Pete Devine of Pete’s Rock News and Views (http://petesrocknewsandviews.com)
PD: What type of artist are you?
RM: I’m an alternative solo artist.
PD: Tell us the brief history of yourself?
RM: I spent many years playing with some great bands and musicians. I was the guitarist and vocalist in Kerouac, who I toured extensively around Europe with for more than a decade. I then joined Marabou, playing Lead Guitar and Vocals. I am currently in Irish metal band Peralis which is going from strength to strength. I felt it was time to kick off my solo career in 2020.
PD: Who are your musical and non-musical influences?
RM: My biggest musical influences would have to be Richie kotzen, Elvis, Gavin Rossdale (BUSH), Daniel Johns (Silverchair), Jimi Hendrix, George Lynch, Rory Gallagher and Incubus. Non musical influences without a doubt would be my awesome parents Michael and Breda who bought me my first guitar and booked me to play my first show in front of 500 people after two months of playing, my missus Kathy aka ‘the muse’ and my band mates in Peralis who I guess would be musical influences aswell.
PD: What are your dreams and goals?
RM:I guess my goals are to keep releasing music and for people to keep listening. I have amazing supporters and I want to get out as much content out for them as possible.
PD: Who writes your songs, what are they about?
RM: As a solo artist I write, record and perform all my music in my home studio. I like to pull inspiration from my life experiences. Every new day brings new inspiration.
PD: How do you promote your band and shows?
RM: Facebook and YouTube are my main sources for promotion. Great platforms for music artists. Also let’s not forget the awesome promotion I get from great content creators such as Petes Rock News 😉
PD: What do you think about downloading music online?
RM: I’m a big fan of online ‘legal’ downloading. It’s a great way to get music to your fans quickly. Google Play, Amazon Music, iTunes etc make life so much easier for musicians.
PD: What song do you wish you’d written and why?
RM: There are so many songs I wish I’d written. Every Richie Kotzen song could top my list but If I was to pick one, I’d have to say by ‘War Paint’ by Richie Kotzen. Lyrically the song is very relatable, ‘I wanna bury my feelings until my mind escapes me’, ‘I wear the war paint to fight off my demons’, are such powerful lyrics and the delivery is just perfection. Richie’s ultra cool writing style is captured so well in this song.
PD: What are some of your pet peeves?
RM: Mysteriously missing socks and when you drop a guitar pick and it disappears into the ether.
PD: What is your proudest moment in music?
RM: One of my proudest moments would have to be getting flown over to play Taubertal Festival in Germany the year Iggy Pop headlined. NOFX, Drop Kick Murphy’s, Rise Against, Bullet For My Valentine and Boy Hits Car also played that year. We were giving free accommodation, food, lots of beer and full access backstage too. I lived the dream that time for sure! Such an amazing Festival, had an absolute blast.
PD: So what are you working on at the moment?
RM: I am very excited to be in the final stages of completing my debut album ‘Significant Progress’. So not long yet to wait.
PD: What music have you available online and where can we buy it from?
RM: My debut EP ‘Through Your Actions’, is available on all major platforms including Spotify, iTunes, Google Play, Deezer, iHeartRADIO, Amazon Music etc. My most recent releases are the first two single ‘Rocket Boots’ and ‘For the Failings’ from my upcoming album. Both are available on all major platforms. I also have all my music videos on the Ren Marabou YouTube channel.
