Interview with Pete Devine of Pete’s Rock News and Views (

PD: What type of artist are you?

VB: I’m Vit and I’m playing in Russian melodic doom/death metal band Psilocybe Larvae.

PD: Tell us the brief history of your band?

VB: Psilocybe Larvae is a four-piece band formed in 1996, Vyborg (now based in St. Petersburg) playing melodic and haunting doom/death/dark/progressive metal.

The band recorded four full-length albums and took part in different compilations and tributes.

PL toured in Germany, Finland, Czech Rep., Slovakia, Poland, Baltic States, Russia, Belarus and Ukraine (the band shared the stage with Anathema, My Dying Bride, Septicflesh, Sadist, Sinister, Swallow The Sun and others).

After 9 years of silence, we return with a new album ‘Where Silence Dwells’ and are ready to unleash it upon the masses.

PD: Who are your musical and non-musical influences?

VB: It comes from different spheres of life: music, gigs, movies, books, traveling, weather, or even the environment you are living in. You know, living in a big city like St. Petersburg has a serious effect on a person, so I would say that silence is a good influence on me. Sure, I’ve always been listening to a lot of diverse music, starting from classic (Beethoven, Grieg, Vivaldi), hard and psychedelic rock (Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd) and ending with metal (Opeth, Slayer, Metallica, Paradise Lost, and many others). Without doubt, subconsciously it can influence me and be reflected in our songs.

PD: What are your dreams and goals?

VB: My dream is to visit as many countries as possible with the band and play many killer and unforgettable shows. The main goal is to promote our new album in all directions and record a few more ones to please our fans!

PD: Who writes your songs, what are they about?

I’m responsible for all music and lyrics in a band. Mostly I’m trying to transfer my emotional experience, my thoughts about death and the purpose in life, different phobias, struggle with personal demons, dreams. It’s like therapy, a try to fence off the outside world.

PD: How do you promote your band and shows?

VB: Sure, the internet is the main tool for promotion: social networks, personal contacts, e-mails and advertising.

PD: What do you think about downloading music online?

VB: It’s really hard to sell albums in physical format with all the people downloading nowadays.

But there is nothing you can do with this, sometimes it works out and I can consider it as an extra option to showcase the music. The thing is that the albums become less valuable, the album artwork becomes less important, people just listen for a few seconds and skip the songs. This does get frustrating me.

PD: What song do you wish you’d written and why?

VB: I’d like to write many songs in different genres like pop or industrial. Or maybe something epic 30-40 minutes long, as Edge Of Sanity’s album “Crimson”. This is a good challenge for the artist, I think.

PD: What are some of your pet peeves?

VB: I am very worried about the situation with the pandemic and the political crisis in the world, and in Russia in particular. I don’t even know what to expect further, because all this shit affects first and foremost ordinary people. I really don’t see a future here for my children and that sucks.

PD: What is your proudest moment in music?

VB: Every album! I am really proud of each one, because this is always hard work, overcoming ourselves. It’s like giving birth to a child in which you put a piece of your soul.

PD: So what are you working on at the moment?

VB: We are putting all efforts to promote our upcoming album called “Where Silence Dwells” to be released on CD via Red Rivet Records (Japan) and Fono ltd (Russia), as well as a cassette version (as self-release) on December, 15. Vinyl is expected out in mid-February 2022. If you want to support the band, you can preorder our merch here:

PD: Tell us about your next shows and why we should be there?

VB: We miss our audience and we want you to participate in our first-ever live stream on December, 17 at 18.00 CET! We are going to present our new album and play it in its entirety. Join us
