Phantom – Interview

Interview with Pete Devine of Pete’s Rock News and Views (

PD:  How would you describe yourself or your band as an artist?

Phantom: if we´re talking about genre, we label ourselves as Speed/Thrash Metal, both genres combined, and we try to keep a dirty rock & roll touch to it, and as a band i think we are a constantly developing unit which delivers with high amounts of  energy and attitude.

PD: Can you tell us briefly about your background – i.e. where you’re from, how you came to make music, etc.

Phantom: Phantom is a band born in Guadalajara, Mexico, once known as the rock capital of the country waaay back in the 70´s and 80´s. Now,  i (J.C García) have been surrounded by metal and rock music since i was a little kid, my family has always been involved with music, one way or another, but i think that it’s just recently when i REALLY got into it, probably around 2017-18. since then i was looking to make a band, and one day during mid 2021 i decided to start one, hell, if a lot of people do it, why not me and my bros? i contacted some guys who i know since middle school and found a guitarist in my music class which shredded like a fucking maniac and there you go! Phantom was born.

PD: Who and what inspires you to make music, both in terms of musical and other influences? What do you like to write about in your songs?

Phantom: We like to write music because of the PASSION we have for music, the energy, the feelings, the power in it, the speed. Now, our influences are really diverse, the direct ones are old school metal bands like Venom, Slayer, Tank, Motörhead, some punk bands like Discharge, Fear, Agnostic Front, Dead Kennedy´s, etc, but some members of the band are into A LOT of other genres too. We usually write about topics that go along well with the mood of the song, this is fast, loud, and aggressive music, so we go through topics that fit into that type of shit, War, Revenge, Horror, Dark shit, the type of shit that scares old people.

PD: What are your aspirations as an artist?

Phantom: To try and leave a mark. move the underground, try and get more people back to REAL METAL, and try to unite a scene in where we´re from, it is sad to see how all these other countries in Europe and North America have great metal scenes while your country is a dead city… where its all about competition and nothing can flourish or be done because of pretentious shitheads who wanna feel like rockstars and overshadow other new acts while their act dies in the process, it seems like an endless cycle until you notice how easy it would be to fix it by just being supportive with other bands and trying to really form unity and solidarity.

PD: What is the proudest moment in your music career so far?

Phantom: Playing a festival at the C3 Stage for around 500-750 people or something like that as our second show. it was very exciting, one of the best moments in our lives for sure.

PD: Promoting one’s music is such a challenge these days, especially with so many new artists emerging from bedrooms in the day of the home studio. How is that going?

Phantom: I think we´re doing okay, but i also think that we could do better, we are just learning, we are one of those newborn bands hahaha

PD: And how do you book and promote your live shows and tours? Any performances coming up?

Phantom: Like i mentioned in the previous question, we´re just learning about everything, we have played like 3 gigs so far, and we´re aiming to play a lot in 2023, we promote our shows via social media like any other band who isn´t formed by neanderthals should do in the 21th century hahaha.

PD: What do you think about downloading music online? What about streaming sites like Spotify?

Phantom: Although there´s nothing like physical media and actually OWNING the music, i have to say that these platforms are really useful, we´re being known in places like Canada, UK, Germany, etc and we have made some really good friends over there thanks to the internet in general, it’s the best resource available for all musicians if they know how to use it.

PD: What song do you wish you’d written and why?

Phantom: Hahaha, i don´t know, probably something from Motörhead, because, well, i don´t need to explain how great Motörhead is.

PD: Is there anything you don’t like about the music industry, which you would change if you could?

Phantom: The abuse there is in some aspects, from labels to artists. i would like to reform the whole thing if i could, but there´s just so many holes and thing to fix in it, the whole industry is damaged, that´s all i can say.

PD: So, what are you working on at the moment?

Phantom: We just released our first full demo, HELLSPEED DEATH, so we wanna spread that as far as we can, play a lot of shows in our city, maybe in some other states, and then start working on recording a debut album by late 2023- early 2024.
