Perceived – Interview

Interview with Pete Devine of Pete’s Rock News and Views (

PD:  How would you describe yourself or your band as an artist?

CB: We’re just three old friends that enjoy getting together and jamming. We don’t play covers so we’ve been writing our own music for years now. The sounds we’ve created needed a title and Perceived was the name we chose.

PD: Can you tell us briefly about your background – i.e. where you’re from, how you came to make music, etc.

CB: Charlie and myself have been jamming and writing songs together for over 20 years. We met Kevin a little over 10 years ago and we all just click musically. We all played in another band together but officially started Perceived in 2018.

PD: Who and what inspires you to make music, both in terms of musical and other influences? What do you like to write about in your songs?

CB: We all have so many different influences musically. Metallica, Pantera, Nirvana, and Tool are a few of our big influences. We tend to write about life and life experiences. We try to pull from all spectrums of human emotions so life and death are common topics.

PD: What are your aspirations as an artist?

CB: We just want to write good rock music and have fun doing it. We’ve all agreed that the minute it stops being fun, we’re done. We do plan on releasing another album next year and I’m sure some new videos. So please subscribe to our YouTube channel.

PD: What is the proudest moment in your music career so far?

CB: Definitely releasing this new music video for our single Darkening is one of our proudest moments. We’re so proud of how it turned out. Nick Forkel did an absolutely amazing job directing and editing the video and we couldn’t be happier with the outcome. You can see the video on our YouTube channel.

PD: Promoting one’s music is such a challenge these days, especially with so many new artists emerging from bedrooms in the day of the home studio. How is that going?

CB: It’s going pretty good honestly. We recorded our first EP ourselves in our rehearsal space with our good friend Daniel Contreras. With home studio technology these days, you can get a really incredible recording for a quarter of the cost. Since we’re a DIY band, we feel this helps artists quite a bit. However, this does make it harder to find quality music. Not everyone is taking the time to make sure they produce a quality product.

PD: And how do you book and promote your live shows and tours? Any performances coming up?

CB: We book ourselves mostly. We always promote on social media as well as our website and old school flyers. We do have a few shows coming up to end the year. We’ll be at O’Riley’s in Dallas on Saturday December 3rd. Then the next weekend we’ll be playing at Big Rob’s in Euless on Friday December 9th and then opening for the mighty Kirra at the Ridglea Room in Ft. Worth Saturday December 10th.

PD: What do you think about downloading music online? What about streaming sites like Spotify?

CB: I think Spotify and being able to download music are great if you want to get your music heard. However, if you want to get paid for your music, then it’s not so great.

PD: What song do you wish you’d written and why?

CB: Happy Birthday because everybody knows that song.

PD: Is there anything you don’t like about the music industry, which you would change if you could?

CB: The music industry just isn’t what it used to be. If I could change one thing, it’d be to bring rock music back into the mainstream.

PD: So, what are you working on at the moment?

CB: As of right now we have finished writing the next album and are hoping to get into the studio sometime early next year. If all that goes according to plan, we’ll be releasing a new single and video sometime in 2023. We’re also planning on publishing more content on our YouTube channel, so keep an eye out for that.

PD: Where can we learn more about you and buy your music/merch online
