Interview with lead singer Håvard Haugan of Pånnivågn Pete Devine of Pete’s Rock News and Views (http://petesrocknewsandviews.com)
PD: What type of artist are you?
HH: Pånnivågn in 2022 can be described as stadium rock with sing-along choruses. Huge, no-excuses, larger-than-life friggin’ rock ‘n roll, with Norwegian lyrics.
PD: Tell us the brief history of yourself.
HH: Pånnivågn was founded in 2003 in Follafoss, Norway. The band members were childhood friends with a common interest in rock music.
The first album “Sle dæ beinntj ned” was released in 2006 and the album “Mellom alt og ingenting” was released in 2012. After our second album was released, we decided to take a break. After almost a decade-long hiatus, we made a comeback last summer.
Today the band has six members: Håvard Haugan (lead singer), Alexander Rødøy Bakken (lead guitar), Ola Årbogen (guitar), Håkon Haugnes Haugan (keytar and piano), Kenneth Stallvik (bass) and Per Ivar Bruheim (drums).
PD: Who are your musical and non-musical influences?
HH: In the beginning we were a Nu-Metal band, but over the years we have moved towards the alternative rock scene, with influences from both punk rock, metal and pop music.
At first we were inspired by the Swedish band LOK. They were big favorites when we were teenagers. Today we listen to many different bands, and get inspiration from everywhere. Outside of music, we must answer that our mothers are our greatest role models 😉
PD: What are your dreams and goals?
HH: To be honest, it had been a dream come true to play at the biggest festivals in Norway. Our goal is for that to happen in 2023!
PD: Who writes your songs, what are they about?
HH: Everyone in the band contributes with both music and lyrics, but the mastermind musically is Ola Årbogen. His flair for good riffs and melodies is unique. At the very beginning of our career, there was a lot of shouting, partying and drunken lyrics, but over the years we have become adults. Last week we released the EP “Dansen” (“The Dance” in English). In this EP we have lyrics about the war in Ukraine, mental health, working class heroes and our little tribute to the phenomenon Justin Bieber. 😉
PD: How do you promote your band and shows?
HH: Facebook, Instagram, local newspapers and posters
PD: What do you think about downloading music online?
HH: For us, it is fantastic and gives us great opportunities. Spotify and the like give us listeners and potential fans we would never have reached otherwise.
PD: What song do you wish you’d written and why?
HH: “Levva Livet” with Åge Aleksandersen and Sambandet. The Greatest Song Ever! Åge Aleksandersen is the Godfather of Norwegian rock!
PD: What is your proudest moment in music?
HH: One of the songs on our latest EP is the ballad “Tung sekk”. This song shows a completely new and different side of Pånnivågn. It starts calmly with the piano, before it builds up to a powerful ending that is in the style of the abnormally heavy lyrical message. At the back is a strong and personal lyric about suicide and mental health. The song was finished when a close acquaintance of the band passed away. The lyrics are about being able to struggle and have difficulty in everyday life, even if you seem strong and healthy on the outside. The song has aroused great commitment from people around us. We have received some heartbreaking and touching messages from people who thank us for putting mental health on the agenda. Of course it touches something in us. At the same time, there is great motivation, when we know that we may make a difference
PD: So what are you working on at the moment?
HH: In September/October we will release our third album, and we are looking forward to that!
PD: What music have you available online and where can we buy it from?
HH: We have two albums, one split single and an EP available online. Listen to Pånnivågn here:
