OVERHATE – Interview

Interview with Pete Devine of Pete’s Rock News and Views (http://petesrocknewsandviews.com)

PD: What type of artist are you?

O: We are the type of artist that like to write and perform extreme music exclusively. I don’t know, I guess I find the beauty of it and like to express myself through it.

PD: Tell us the brief history of yourself.

O: Overhate: the band was formed in 2003 out of the ashes of a new metal band that was called ‘Mermelada Maker’. When that line-up fell apart, only 4 guys that shared their love for thrash metal and progressive music. We have produced 3 albums: 2007’s “God in a Trench”, 2011’s “Relentless is our Strength” and 2020’s “New Beginnings are Met”. We have toured all of Venezuela, and have played shows in Colombia, Ecuador, India and Canada. We are preparing for our first Europe tour. Next year we will release our follow up to our last record. So far this is our story.

Me: I’m a 42 year old metal musician and Pharmacist (yes, I do regulatory affairs). I love thrash, death, black metal and grindcore. I play guitar and front the bands Overhate, Vettor N’the Insurrectos and Pray.

PD: Who are your musical and non-musical influences?

O: Musical influences: I’ll save a forest to not name the whole lot of bands that I listen to and I feel they’ve influenced me. But again, my main influences apart from the extreme metal bands you’d imagine are Jazz, Classical and maybe reggae if that makes sense to you.

Non-musical influences, are mainly the experiences that inspire me to write my music and lyrics I’d say.

PD: What are your dreams and goals?

O: At this moment in my life, just to have possibilities and peace of mind will do. Life is a bit tough to search for anything else in my opinion.

PD: Who writes your songs, what are they about?

O: I mainly write the bulk of the stuff, but there is collaboration from everybody else as well. Lyrically, Overhate has a strong social content, as well as spiritual content in some of the lyrics, I’d say. Our last record “New Beginnings are Met” is mainly about social content. Songs like “Beneath the Curse”, “Realities Collide” and “Hidden Behind Words” can give you a clear idea of what I want to say with that. There are also songs like “God I’ve Found” and “Modern Grial” who are dealing with the spiritual side. I think that our next record may be a bit more personal, but there’s almost always energy and focus to go for that kind of lyrics.

PD: How do you promote your band and shows?

O: Right now we are doing a lot of PR, for our new single “Our problem” which is off of “New Beginnings are Met”. We will prepare a video for the song, and basically that is all there is to it.

PD: What do you think about downloading music online?

O: I think is good there is a broader access, and a lot of chance for discovering new bands. I just really hope people just enjoyed music a bit more. It looks like for people 30 seconds of one song is enough.

PD: What song do you wish you’d written and why?

O: I think I’m comfortable with the songs that I’ve written. If I were to imagine someone’s song that I would have written it’d be “When the sun burns red” by Kreator. That was the first song I’ve heard from them, and it just blew me away!

PD: What are some of your pet peeves?

O: Adult life? Lol

PD: What is your proudest moment in music?

O: It was when someone showed me a tattoo from one of my lyrics in her arm. She really showed me that she was touched by the song, and I guess that you just can’t top that.

PD: So what are you working on at the moment?

O: A left over song from the “New Beginnings are Met” sessions entitled “A crushing shade”. It is an epic song that cloks at 12 minutes, so we want to release it as a stand-alone song. It will be really cool, as it is a very different song from what we’ve written in our records.

PD: What music have you available online and where can we buy it from?

O: Our music is available in every platform, and you can buy it from Bandcamp!
