OneFromTheNorth – Interview

Interview with Pete Devine of Pete’s Rock News and Views (

PD: How would you describe yourself or your band as an artist?

OFTN: OneFromTheNorth is a combination of different genres and music I like to listen to in general, and this describes me as a person as well. I’m open-minded and like to mix up things to create something unique, have fun, and create music seriously but without pressure.

PD: Can you tell us briefly about your background – i.e. where you’re from, how you came to make music, etc.

OFTN: I live in Hämeenlinna, Finland, where I’ve lived my whole life. I’ve done music a lot for years and years, and I’m a self-taught person what comes to music. I started to play guitar when I was something like 12 years old. I saw my friend playing some nice things, and I remember I wanted to learn only that, and after that, I won’t play anything. Well, after that my friend showed me some things, we played together, we started a band, etc. Basic stuff in general. From the beginning, I’ve been making my own music, playing in multiple bands and doing live shows. At first, there were bands like Sepultura, Iron Maiden, and Metallica who showed the way and after that many others as well.

PD: Who and what inspires you to make music, both in terms of musical and other influences? What do you like to write about in your songs?

OFTN: It’s just in my blood. Making music is extremely important to me as it is a perfect escape from reality and all the pressure we have in our daily lives. It is always awesome to hear a good song, no matter the genre. After I hear a good song, I’ve noticed that it instantly gives me the inspiration to make music. And when the song is finished or I’ve created a good riff or whatever, it gives me every time the same feeling when I was that 12 years old small fella who just figured out how to play Unforgiven by Metallica. I won’t ever forget that… haha!

About the lyrics, sometimes I write about my daily life, what I feel, and all the problems I face in my life. Some are of course very painful, and music and writing are a great way to get it out. Some of the lyrics are about the world situation and all the bad things we see in the world. Basically, lyric source is endless.

PD: What are your aspirations as an artist?

OFTN: I want to hit big stages in the future and really get my music out there. It would be a massive thing for me if I’d live only by making music someday. Making music is just a significant part of me. Hopefully many people will hear the music. I’m still realistic, but this is my aspiration as an artist.

PD: What is the proudest moment in your music career so far?

OFTN: I need to say OneFromTheNorth in general. It is self-made thing from the beginning to the end. I have created my own way of making music and my own sound. I dare to say that.

For instance, the previous album Through the Grey Stone to Ravage is something I’m extremely proud of; I wrote the whole album, recorded it, and mixed it. I made the whole entity, and let’s face it; this is something everyone cannot do. I’ve done a lot of work, and I’m extremely proud of it.

PD: Promoting one’s music is such a challenge these days, especially with so many new artists emerging from bedrooms in the day of the home studio. How is that going?

OFTN: You’re right, this is the main issue, I’d say. It is extremely hard to get your music out there as there are a lot of different bands and artists. Some are good and some are… well, not that good. All those create a mass where it is hard to get yourself to be visible. Promoting is very hard and I’ve been thinking a lot about how to do it. But after all, I’m an artist and I’m good at making music. Someone else is good at promoting music, so it would be nice to get some help on this.

PD: And how do you book and promote your live shows and tours? Any performances coming up?

OFTN: OneFromTheNorth is not doing live shows at the moment. The band is trying to get the audience and solid foundation at first before hitting the stage. We have a lineup, and we’ve played and rehearsed a lot. The lineup is full of hardcore musicians regarding live shows, so can we say “we’re not here for the first time”.

PD: What do you think about downloading music online? What about streaming sites like Spotify?

OFTN: Well it is what it is nowadays, and we just need to accept it. Streaming services are an extremely great way to get your music out when thinking about bands like OneFromTheNorth. It is great that you get your music out. At this point, I’m an independent artist, and my income is not depending on the music. But I really do get it when bigger artists are not getting paid as they should when there are these streaming services. So it’s kind of a double-edged sword. As a consumer, it is of course, a wonderful thing to get everything easily and, in most cases, for free.

PD: What song do you wish you’d written and why?

OFTN: Oh my, that’s a hard question. It could be basically anything but let’s say, for example, Mother North by Satyricon. The song is just too good, and the atmosphere is amazing.

PD: Is there anything you don’t like about the music industry, which you would change if you could?

OFTN: Well, if we think about it on a general level, it is quite strange that an artist won’t get paid for the music and the art itself but for all the hassle around it. The whole industry is kind of twisted. I don’t know how to fix it or what should be done. Is it just something that artists need to live with? Or is there something artists should do to change the industry? That’s a good question.

PD: So, what are you working on at the moment?

OFTN: I’m making a lot of music at the moment and planning to release the third OneFromTheNorth album. I don’t know just yet when it’d be out but it is on the horizon already. Music music music.
