UNSIGNED SUNDAY with VICTORIA LLEWELYN
Every Sunday afternoon Victoria brings you a cosy Q&A session with some of the most exciting new and/or unsigned bands and artists currently on the scene. This week it’s a chat with Gareth Stapleton, rhythm guitarist with One Last Day. Put your feet up and read on.
VL: How would you describe your band to those that don’t yet know you?
GS: We are a hard rock band from the South East of England with a diverse range of influences, all of which help define our sound.
VL: Let’s talk a little bit about your background – where you’re from, how you came to make music, that kinda thing
GS: We are all from Berkshire and the surrounding areas, and have all grown up with a love for rock and metal music. We’ve all been in bands previously, with extensive touring and recording experiences between us, and One Last Day is the product of those experiences and successes.
VL: Who and what inspires you to make music, both in terms of musical and other influences? What do you like to write about in your songs?
GS: We have a range of inspirations from different artists including (but not limited to) Shinedown, Alter Bridge, Three Days Grace, Bon Jovi (John’s favourite guitarist is Richie Sambora), Oasis (blame Gareth for that one!) From a lyrical point of view, Alex likes to write about real life experiences and observations of the lives of people around him.
VL: What are your aspirations as an artist?
GS: We would love nothing more than to be able to continue making music and grow our fan base, and find ways to inspire other artists and musicians in the future.
VL: What is the proudest moment in your music career so far?
GL: I once played a show supporting KMFDM at the O2 academy in Islington with my previous band. I’ve had loads of moments, but that one stands out. Alex would probably have some similar stories of touring with his last band and supporting some big named artists!
VL: Promoting music can be a real challenge these days, especially with so many new artists emerging from bedrooms in the day of the home studio. How is that going for you guys?
GS: We are slowly growing as a band, and we find we have new fans every day, so as long as continue to do what we’re doing, I think we will do ok!
VL: How do you book and promote your live shows and tours? Any performances coming up?
GS: We book shows through existing contacts and new contacts we find online. We promote shows through Facebook events and creating posters that we can put up on our socials and print off. We have a few shows coming up. 3rd February 2023 at The Acoustic Couch in Bracknell. 4th February at The Factory in Worthing and 6th May in Liverpool playing Voodoofest. We are also booking a 4 day tour around the North of England for the end of April, so watch this space!
VL: What do you think about downloading music online, and streaming sites like Spotify?
GS: It’s great for helping artists get their music to existing and new fans more quickly and efficiently, and a very good promotional tool. Unfortunately, the financial reward is minimal, leaving artists continuously trying to find new ways to get paid and fund their music.
VL: What song do you wish you’d written and why?
GS: Blackbird by Alter Bridge. What a masterpiece!
VL: Is there anything you don’t like about the music industry, which you would change if you could?
GS: I’m sure there’s many things, however, the amount of money artists get paid for streams is a good place to start.
VL: What are you working on at the moment?
GS: We’ve just sent our next single off to be mixed and mastered and will be releasing it in the new year with a video. We also have a number of other new songs we are currently putting the finishing touches to before we start recording.
VL: Where can we learn more about you and buy your music/merch online?
