On Atlas’ Shoulders – Interview

Interview with Pete Devine of Pete’s Rock News and Views (http://petesrocknewsandviews.com)

PD: What type of artist are you?

OAS: On Atlas’ Shoulders is an Epic Heavy Metal band.

PD: Tell us the brief history of yourself.

OAS: The band was founded in late 2018 in Frankfurt, Germany, by Marius Bönisch (vocals) and Ben Chadwick (guitar) and completed with Björn Anders (guitar) and Leonard Pick (drums). We released our debut album “Invictus” in June 2020 and our second full-length “Hyperion” has been announced for late spring 2021.

PD: Who are your musical and non-musical influences?

OAS: Our musical influences are very diverse, from traditional metal to power and prog all the way to death metal. Examples include Judas Priest, Unleash the Archers, Breaking Benjamin, Dream Theater and Obscura. In terms of the type of songs we write, the most noticeable influences are traditional and power metal bands.

PD: What are your dreams and goals?

OAS: In the near-term, we can’t wait to finally unleash our second full-length album “Hyperion” – and, should the pandemic permit, perform as many live gigs as possible to support the release!

In the long-term, we want to continue to push ourselves musically, play larger shows and festivals – simply continue to do what we all love.

PD: Who writes your songs, what are they about?

OAS: Often, Ben and Björn write the riffs, Marius the vocal melodies and lyrics, and Leo all the drum sections. But all in all it is a collaborative approach and we take ideas from everyone, combining them to our signature sound.

In terms of lyrical themes, Marius is responsible for most of them, with the exception of some lyrics that were written by Ben. The overarching goal of our lyrics is to convey courage and a fighting spirit. The themes reach from epic tales, that take the listener to foreign worlds; to difficult emotions and internal conflicts, that are described visually; to motivating lyrics aimed at evoking feelings of strength. For us it is always important that our songs have a meaning.

PD: How do you promote your band and shows?

OAS: Primarily through social media, especially Instagram (@onatlasshoulders).

PD: What do you think about downloading music online?

OAS: The way music is consumed has changed drastically over the recent past, primarily driven through digitalization. And although we would love for physical record sales to be as relevant as they were in the past, it is an irreversible process that modern musicians simply have to adapt to. For us that means focusing on social media, merch and more.

One other thing that has changed is that “the market” prefers shorter releases/EPs, as the consumer’s attention span has shortened through everything being available instantly online. As for us, we have consciously decided to still release full-length albums, as we simply love the format, with some of us being vinyl collectors.

PD: What song do you wish you’d written and why?

OAS: We would all love to have written heavy metal classics, songs that inspired countless other musicians to pursue their dreams and influenced generations to come. Songs that come to mind are Painkiller by Priest, Trooper by Maiden, Paranoid by Sabbath, and so many more.

PD: What are some of your pet peeves?

OAS: For our singer Marius, when he wants to say something during a rehearsal but the guitarists won’t stop noodling or the drummer can’t stop playing haha!

PD: What is your proudest moment in music?

OAS: So far, our debut record “Invictus” – and soon, releasing our follow up-full length “Hyperion”!

PD: So what are you working on at the moment?

OAS: We are currently in the process of releasing the first singles to our upcoming second album.

PD: Tell us about your next shows and why we should be there.

OAS: Shows? What are live shows? Jokes aside, due to the pandemic, actual live gigs are currently impossible for us here in Germany. But we hope to be able to support our upcoming release with as many gigs as possible! Until then, follow us on social media (e.g. Instagram @onatlasshoulders) to stay up to date on upcoming shows.

As for why you should be there: If you like memorable harmonies, harmonized guitar riffs, thundering double bass and a show as energetic as our music, look no further! Get ready for Epic Heavy Metal!
