Ominous:Extant – Interview

Interview with Pete Devine of Pete’s Rock News and Views (http://petesrocknewsandviews.com)

PD:  How would you describe yourself or your band as an artist?

O:E – We are a technical death metal band with progressive metal influences. The band seeks to create something different in a music scene dominated by death and thrash metal

PD: Can you tell us briefly about your background – i.e. where you’re from, how you came to make music, etc.

O:E – We’re based in San Jose, Costa Rica. We are a group of friends that started the band a couple of years ago trying to come up with a mix of different influences. Once I had a solid idea of what we could do (Erikson Guitarist) we started working out our first song.

PD: Who and what inspires you to make music, both in terms of musical and other influences? What do you like to write about in your songs?

O:E – Our music fuses technical and melodic sounds with lyrics that delve into the deep and ominous nature of reality, exploring existential observations about the human psyche.  It’s a collection of analyses and narratives about existence, told from the perspective of the human psyche, so most of out inspiration comes from there.

PD: What are your aspirations as an artist?

O:E – We would love to play next to our favorite artists and it would awesome to play in different countries around the world and meet new bands and musicians

PD: What is the proudest moment in your music career so far?

O:E – The release of our first single, It was a really long journey, lots of coffee and long nights in studio so we are really happy with the result.

PD: Promoting one’s music is such a challenge these days, especially with so many new artists emerging from bedrooms in the day of the home studio. How is that going?

O:E – It’s been really hard, especially when you are located in Costa Rica  and not everyone wants to give you a chance. Also we are trying to be really active on social media but some people find that annoying, but sadly that’s the only way we can spread our work.

PD: And how do you book and promote your live shows and tours? Any performances coming up?

O:E – We just released our first single a couple of days ago, so right now we’re trying to focus on the release of our album. Once we are done with that the idea is to start being more active in the scene

PD: What do you think about downloading music online? What about streaming sites like Spotify?

O:E – Streaming services are a great tool, however it would be nice if artists could make a little profit out of it.

PD: What song do you wish you’d written and why?

O:E –  Probably Anesthetize by Porcupine Tree

– The composition and the coexistence between heavy riffs and “tranquility” is just perfect.

– I can’t imagine the joy of one playing such a masterpiece and like knowing that you wrote that, haha

PD: Is there anything you don’t like about the music industry, which you would change if you could?

O:E –  I probably would like to see more brotherhood between artists and labels, I would be nice to coexiste on way that both are benefited

PD: So, what are you working on at the moment?

O:E – We are currently working on the release of our album

Feb – Sentient

March – Summoning

April –  Complete Album

PD: Where can we learn more about you and buy your music/merch online?

O:E – We are trying to be very active on social media, so that would be a great place to learn more about us and also be up to date with our releases.

Thank you so much for all the support, we are looking forward to sharing more of our music very soon.
