Octopus Montage – Interview
Interview with Alex Jennings of Octopus Montage and Pete Devine of Pete’s Rock News and Views (http://petesrocknewsandviews.com)
Octopus Montage are;
Dec Naylor – Vocals and Guitar
Alex Jennings – Vocals and Guitar
Davina (Div) Naylor – Bass
Cain Dylan – Drums
PD: What type of artist are you?
AJ: We are a Pop-Punk/Metalcore band from sunny Blackpool, England!
PD: Tell us the brief history of yourself.
AJ: The project began in 2016 as 4 mates playing a bunch of covers in a garage, mainly from bands like The Sex Pistols and blink-182. From here we’ve had a few line up changes and to date we’ve released 1 Ep and a bunch of singles.
PD: Who are your musical and non-musical influences?
AJ: As individuals we are all influenced by a range of music. For example Dec is influenced by some hip-hop artists such as Childish Gambino of which you probably wouldn’t have expected if you’ve heard our music.
Each band members biggest musical influence;
Dec Naylor – blink-182
Alex Jennings – Nirvana
Davina Naylor – A Day To Remember
Cain Dylan – Architects
In terms of non-musical influences I think we are influenced by a lot of the things that we have experienced in our lives. For example, the opening track from our EP ‘Reborn (…Again’) ‘Fuck It!’ is about a particularly dark time in one of our lives and speaks on subjects such as our experiences with antidepressants,etc.
PD: What are your dreams and goals?
AJ: As a band I think our collective goal is to is to be able to release music, play live shows and continue living our dream without having to worry about things like jobs and stuff like that hahaha! Please buy our merch so we can quit our jobs!
PD: Who writes your songs, what are they about?
AJ: The main songwriters for us are Dec and myself (Alex.) We tend to write about past experiences. I guess it is a way in which we can reflect on things that have happened to us – I’d like to think that the music is almost an extension on ourselves.
PD: How do you promote your band and shows?
AJ: A lot of our promotion is done online on social media such as Facebook, Instagram,etc. It’s a way in which we can reach the audiences that we think would like what we do a lot easier than older marketing strategies.
PD: What do you think about downloading music online?
AJ: Providing that the way in which the music is downloaded legally and in a way in which the bands get the royalties in which they deserve then it’s cool! Having said that, it is flattering that people want to download our music regardless of whether they do it legally or illegally although I don’t think some people understand the negative effects of downloading a bands music illegally. Basically just download our music properly hahaha!
PD: What song do you wish you’d written and why?
AJ: Wow, what a question! Personally I would have loved to have written the song ‘Safe To Say’ by American Metalcore outfit ‘Vanna.’ Although it may not be the blockbuster song you may have been expecting I think it’s an exceptional song that hasn’t got the credit it deserve!
PD: What are some of your pet peeves?
AJ: Probably each other!
PD: What is your proudest moment in music?
AJ: Hitting 1 million streams on Spotify!
PD: So what are you working on at the moment?
AJ: New music and lots of it! We’re working on a lot of new tunes at the minute and we are excited by who we will be working with… That’s all I can say for now !!!!
PD: Tell us about your next shows and why we should be there.
AJ: Our next show is a hometown show in Blackpool at Bootleg Social on the 28th June. You should be there because it is going to be one big party and we genuinely can’t wait for it!
