Interview with Pete Devine of Pete’s Rock News and Views (http://petesrocknewsandviews.com)
PD: How would you describe yourself or your band as an artist?
N: Newtierra is an Asylum that explores experimental ways to treat mental disorders through exposure to various sound and visual combinations. Psychiatrists selected a focus group of four people represented by us and now you are observing the process of this research.
PD: Can you tell us briefly about your background – i.e. where you’re from, how you came to make music, etc.
N: Newtierra was founded in 2015. Asylum psychiatrists found patients with the most suitable diagnoses for research by the end of 2018.
These diagnoses are reflected in their codes. An important selection criterion was the propensity to play musical instruments for the most effective involvement in the process. F20.1 liked to chat with the voices in her head from a very young age. F41.2 against the background of general increased anxiety eventually acquired the habit of tapping on everything. The depressive F32.3 showed an increased interest in distorted sounds. And on the changeable F13.4 which from a state of complete apathy could explode with a storm of emotions, only the lowest frequencies acted. Thus the process of creating therapeutic procedures was started the first full course of which was released in 2019. In the course of further work, Asylum released both separate new procedures in 2020 and 2021, and another small course in 2022. Research continues to this day.
PD: Who and what inspires you to make music, both in terms of musical and other influences? What do you like to write about in your songs?
N: The creation of music is primarily influenced by therapeutic techniques well-chosen by our psychiatrists. As well as the surrounding world in all its variety of sounds and colors. Our songs touch upon various aspects of human existence, through which our state is stabilized and we come into contact with our true self.
PD: What are your aspirations as an artist?
N: Go crazy beautifully and with pleasure, bring our visitors «pure music medicine for your ears, for your mind cause we care about you».
PD: What is the proudest moment in your music career so far?
N: The opportunity to discover new facets of ourselves and help our visitors with this.
PD: Promoting one’s music is such a challenge these days, especially with so many new artists emerging from bedrooms in the day of the home studio. How is that going?
N: We are constantly improving our therapies and presenting them on all the most popular resources. We also offer our visitors bright and memorable live inpatient therapies.
PD: And how do you book and promote your live shows and tours? Any performances coming up?
N: Asylum cooperates with various local organizers with some on an ongoing basis and is also in constant search of new contacts with those who are interested in our research. Now our efforts are mainly focused on creating a new therapy course but we are always open to the proposals.
PD: What do you think about downloading music online? What about streaming sites like Spotify?
N: We are always ready to share our creativity in any format. Now the most convenient are indeed streaming services. Therefore our procedures are available on all the most popular ones.
PD: What song do you wish you’d written and why?
N: A conceptual full-length therapy course in which all human experiences would be collected so that people could feel them and celebrate life in all its diversity.
PD: Is there anything you don’t like about the music industry, which you would change if you could?
N: We would give artists from less popular, underground genres anywhere in the world more opportunities to express themselves.
PD: So, what are you working on at the moment?
N: Asylum is working on the creation of its second full therapy course and has already presented several procedures from it which you can find on all known platforms at the moment.
PD: Where can we learn more about you and buy your music/merch online?
