Interview with Pete Devine of Pete’s Rock News and Views (http://petesrocknewsandviews.com)
PD: What type of artist are you?
NNM: Hi, we’re Never Never Man, we make psych pop records with a soulful edge.
PD: Tell us the brief history of yourself.
NNM: Myself and Ollie had been playing together for a while and the band had gone through a lot of versions and great players over time but when we started to work on a newer sound based around Esther’s tone that’s when this line up really fell into shape.
Esther joined the band sort of by accident. As friends Gavin and Ollie and I have always bonded over music in a social setting so it felt very natural to start collaborating with our own creations.
PD: Who are your musical and non-musical influences?
NNM: We pull from a lot of different places, Gavin likes a lot of 70s psychedelic music, Ollie a bit more of the electronic side of things and Esther has quite a broad range too with a lot of neo soul and RnB creeping in. We also all love an 80s pop tune.
PD: What are your dreams and goals?
NNM: Just to make a few great records! We love being in the studio and hopefully contributing to modern pop music in our own way.
PD: Who writes your songs, what are they about?
NNM: It’s a group effort – usually one of us has an idea and we all add to it, the songs are about a lot of different things, people, places and events from our lives.
PD: How do you promote your band and shows?
NNM: We use social media and nights out like most artists but to be honest we’re more of a studio collective than a live band really that’s home for us.
PD: What do you think about downloading music online?
NNM: It’s the future and it makes music super accessible but the flip side is it’s harder for artists to make any money selling physicals anymore.
PD: What song do you wish you’d written and why?
NNM: As a band we have a pretty big collective love for Off The Wall, especially the bridge it’s incredible.
PD: What are some of your pet peeves?
NNM: Being asked what our pet peeves are of course! Oh and mayo on every sandwich ever! Say no to mayo!
PD: What is your proudest moment in music?
NNM: Apart from chatting to you fine people 😉 I think it was hearing the masters back of our album for the first time.
PD: So what are you working on at the moment?
NNM: Currently working on music both in and outside of the band dynamics but the second album is done and ready to be birthed into the world at some point soon!
PD: What music have you available online and where can we buy it from?
NNM: We have a lot of older materials including our first album and EP on all streaming services and YouTube etc and our new single “Breaking the Cycle” is out on the 7th October on Catch 21 Records.
