Q1: How would you describe yourself or your band?
A1: Necronomicon Ex Mortis takes 80s shred and 90s death metal riffs and wraps all of it in a low-grade B horror movie starring Bruce Campbell.
Q2: Can you tell us briefly about your background?
A2: Necronomicon Ex Mortis was formed by a bunch of buds from Berklee that Mike essentially Tom Sawyered into being a band with him. Tom Sawyer is also a song by the Canadian prog trio Rush.
Q3: Who and what inspires you to make music? What do you like to write about in your songs?
A3: 80s shred guys like Tony MacAlpine, Vinnie Moore, and Jason Becker inspire me as a guitarist. Bands like Entombed, At the Gates, and Death inspire me as a songwriter. Non music influences are mainly horror movies and video games. For us, it’s Halloween every day.
Q4: What are your aspirations as an artist?
A4: I’d like to successfully blend all of my favorite things as seamlessly as possible.
Q5: What is the proudest moment in your career so far?
A5: Releasing music with Necronomicon Ex Mortis. It feels like being myself instead of playing a character while performing someone else’s music.
Q6: Promoting one’s music is such a challenge these days, how is that going?
A6: Promotion has been going pretty well, we’ve had a decent reception so far. We like to take a tongue in cheek approach to promotion because a little humor goes a long way when it comes to advertising.
Q7: How do you book and promote your live shows and tours, any performances coming up?
A7: All of that crap is very expensive, so for right now we’re focusing on getting a few releases out so people know who we are. We don’t want to rely on the same 4-5 songs for the better part of a year or more.
Q8: What do you think about downloading music online, what about streaming sites like Spotify?
A8: I’m old school, I prefer physical media purchased with paper money. The guys in the band call me grandad for a reason. Manuel uses Tidal because they give him more money than anyone else.
Q9: What song do you wish you’d written and why?
A9: I wish I had written any song in Decrepit Birth’s catalogue. That band is such a unique combination of melody and brutality that I get insanely jealous every time I sit down to listen to them.
Q10: Is there anything you don’t like in the music industry that you would change if you could?
A10: Constant content creating can get exhausting.
Q11: What are you working on at the moment?
A11: Right now we are promoting the release of our first EP as well as writing/recording 2 more potential releases this year. Some of us are also working on a truly ridiculous side project that we are very excited for.
Q12: Where can we learn more about you and buy your music/merch online?
A12: The best places to do that are you Instagram and Bandcamp pages.
